To continue my answer to the reader who described the symptons of bulimarexia, we will now discuss the damage to one's health which can be caused by this problem. To update those who missed lasfweek's column, "bulimarexia" is defined as binge eating followed by self-induced vomiting or use of cathartic drugs, such as laxatives. The most common problem is malnutrition, which has a frequent side effect of chemically causing depression. Severe malnutrition can damage or destroy a person's ability to reproduce, to fight off infection, and limit normal growth. MALNUTRITION is caused by vomiting up the food before the nutrients have been digested and absorbed by the Ixxiy. Some people with this disorder take laxatives with the thought that they are pushsing the food out of their l>ody without getting the calories. They are incorrect. Whenever food makes it through the digestive tract to the colon, it is getting digested. TIIK LAXATIVES tend to draw water out of the body, which fools the per son into thinking he or she is keeping real weight off This water loss can lead to terrible imbalances in key chemicals which make up the cells and result in kidney disease and heart J stoppage. digestive acids as soon as it reaches the stomach. So the person who induces vomiting is throwing up the acids along with the food. The acids touch parts of the body with which they never were designed to come into contact. THE SWALLOWING tube (esophagus) often will become terribly scarred and narrowed as a result. It may then become difficult or impossible to swallow food at all. The treatments for this are rather unpleasant, not always successful and have a number of risks. The acidic vomit also causes the tooth enamel to dissolve and leads to gum disease. If some of the vomit is inhaled by accident, as is often the case, these persons end up in the hospital with serious lung Infections. IF YOU reflect on it, you can imagine that the binge eating itself comes as a dramatic shock to the system The body sees food as chemical nutrients. When it senses massive quantities of nutrients entering it, the body tries to • meet the need for digestion with the right chemical reactions. On some occasions the stomach has been known to swell suddenly, causing extension of the abdomen, severe pain, nausea and possibly even involuntary vomiting. KEEP IN mind also that the pancreas prepares insulin for digesting the massive food onslaught.

The pancreas becomes tormented by the binge eating and the terribly painful disorder "pancreatitis" can result, which in its acute form kills 1 out l of 20 ^ Now there are a few extremely rare causes of this disorder that are physical However, one would not expect persons to hide their vomiting in such cases. These include lesions in the central nervous system with key symptoms of headache, dizziness, history of epilepsy or perceptual disturbances THOSE WHO know people with this disorder may be tempted to wave this column in their face, as though knowledge of the damage they can do to themselves may stop them It's not my experience that this will deter anyone. Their dilemma has become too complex for such a simple solution.
