Long before Americans l.indsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks turned Fleetwood Mac into megastars, the English band was a highly respected blues band that sparkled thanks to three guitarisLs. Peter Green. Jeremy Spencer, and Danny Ktrwan. This early1! Fleetwood Mac based its^sound on its Chicago blues influences and they could always be counted on for exciting solos, especially from Green, and good material, most notably the frantic •Oh Well" and the rhythmic "Black Magic W oman." later a smash for Santana. Jumping At Shadows iVarrick, One Camp St.. Cambridge. MA 021401 is^ breathtaking live outing k from the original Fleet- ' wood Mac that was recorded in Boston in 1969.
HERE. IN all their glory, are three guitarists who blended together perfectly to create a style that could be tranquil one second only to break loose into some biting blues the next. Although present day Fleetwood Mac fans will probably be confused by this, those of us who've followed the band since Peter Green departed John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in 1967 to form his own blues band will thoroughly enjoy Jumping At Shadows. ONE OF THE premier blueS^labels. Kent, has been reactivated (1100 Glendon Ave.. Los Angeles. CA. 90024) and is busy getting its music back in circulation. One record that should be of interest to a large number of people is B.B. King's The Unexpected Instrumental B.B. King. Granted. King is a fine vocalist who can rip apart ■ an audience on an emo- I tional ballad, but it's those I stinging guitar solos people I have always craved. A couple of these blues I workouts might be a bit tedious for some. but. I overall, this is prime in- I strumental blues with B.B. I King proudly flaunting his I talents BEFORE LEAVING the I blues world. Dancing Cat I (P.O. Box 639. Santa Cruz. I CA 95061 ) has made I available a 1974 session by the late New Orleans piano wizard Professor Longhair. Rock 'n' Roll Gumbo, like most of Longhair's work, is warm, relaxed, and chock full of humor. His blend of Caribbean music, blues, and jazz continues to baffle pianists who want to learn from the Professor Even though Professor longhair passed away in 1980. his music continues to win over newfans.
