Mild Summer Helps Cut Cooling Costs
PLEASANTVILLE - Efficiency is the watchword at Atlantic Electric when it comes to air conditioners. That's why utility executives were pleased by this summer's mild temperatures. Lower thermometer readings meant lower
energy bills for customers and fewer air conditioner impulse buys. And, according to a government study, cooling costs this summer ran <348 million below normal. IN NEW Jersey the average in July, <2.44 below normal. "This year, people bought fewer small window air conditioners because we had no long, extended heat wave," noted David V. Boney, vice president of customer and community services "And that's good because typically, a lot of inefficient models are bought on impulse when • the weather's hot." BONEY ALSO noted that the number of Cold Cash Rebates for efficiency made on central units rose more than 10 per cent, indicating that people installing large air conditioning systems are buying high efficiency models. Atlantic Electric is supporting proposed state legislation that would ban the sale of inefficient air conditioners to help reduce the growth in peak electrical demand during the summer.
