"Definitely, " said Nancy McDermott, who earned such a degree from CCC in 1977. "At Cumberland, 1 began to realize that the world is as large or small as you want it to be. I feel I gained an expanded perspective of life's disciplines by taking liberal arts courses there." Since she graduated from CCC, Nancy has obtained a bachelor's degree in biomedical communications from Stockton State College and a master's degree in business administration from Monmouth College. Nancy attended CCC part-time, taking evening courses while working for Prudential Insurance Company in Millville, "Higher education was a tenacious search for me in the beginning, ' ' she said. "I knew I wanted something out of life, and it got more defined as I progressed." * The alumna, a Marmora resident, gained a broad background in the humanities by completing such courses as World Literature, Western Civilization and Short Story at CCC. And at Stockton she specialized in the medical field, developing skills in photography, video production and technical writing The education Nancy received through college —humanities, biomedical communications and business administration — provided an excellent preparation for the job she has held at Prudential since 1983, Electronic Media Claims Representative. The local Prudential Branch processes Medicare claims for the states of New Jersey. North Carolina and Georgia. As an area representative Nancy communicates with doctors, hospital officials and other representatives of health agencies A major message Nancy conveys to these individuals is to "get rid of paperwork" by implementing computerized claim entry systems She communicates by developing and distributing literature, conducting seminars and visiting appropriate sites "Everyone involved benefits when computers are used to process Medicare claims," Nancy explained. "Payments are consistent and the cost of filing them is reduced greatly." The demands and rewards of Nancy's career are great And. she noted, the preparation for her position began at CCC. "Obtaining a college education isn't easy; it's a step-by-step process," Nancy related "If 1 hadn't earned an associate's ' degree at Cumberland eight years ago, I wouldn't possess a master's degree today." During fall semester, Nancy will serve as an adjunct faculty member at CCC, teaching Introduction to Business. "I grew a lot at Cumberland, and it's fulfilling to be able to share with others some of the lessons I learned there." she said. The alumna lives with her husband. Bill, and daughter.
