A Bright Outlook For Solar Power

There's still plenty of sunshine, but time is running out on a chance to obtain a tax credit by putting it to work in a home solar heating system, warns Frank McLaughlin of Stone Harbor. McLaughlin recently started a new solar energy company, All Quality Solar Systems, to plug the sun as an economical alternative for home heating, produc-

ing hot water, and warming swimming pools. "THE GOAL of this firm," says McLaughlin, formerly marketing manager of South Jersey Solar, "is to help as many people as possible to make the switch to clean, abundant solar. We do this with super solar systems, tax credit information, the rebates offered by the utilities, and savings estimates." Hiis area, with its almost year-'round sunshine and utility rates among the highest in the country, offers a good prospect for solar power, McLaughlin added. THE THREE common uses for "active" solar systems, those which collect and distribute solar energy, are for domestic water heating, space heating, and heating swimming pools. McLaughlin's firm expects to concentrate on solar domestic hot water heating, which, he said, is the first solar step most people should make. The hot water heater, according to McLaughlin, racks up the No. 2 energy bill in most homes. It must operate 12 months of the year, months in which the sun shines in Cape May County, and in which a solar water heater can provide most of the needed heat. SUCH A system need not be expensive, says McLaughlin, with large monthly savings, utility rebates, and the 40 percent federal tax credit which will be applicable until Dec. 31. Solar systems can be installed in almost any home, since no specific house design is needed, he went on. McLaughlin plans to hold seminars to educate the public on the virtues of solar power. He predicts (what else?) a bright future for solar energy use in sunny Cape May County.
