Local Gridders Prepare For Season Openers

Cape Atlantic League football players are sweating it out until season openers on Sept. 28. New faces are coming into focus at Ocean City High School and the picture looks good to first year head coach Tony Galante. .Galante stepped up from assistant coach with great expectations for the new season. Last year's South Jersey champions have a whole new look after losing 20 of 22 starters. A major survivor for the Haiders is Chris Gunnels The 6-4. 265-pound tackle will be carrying much of the team's success on his shoulders as he draws the

attention of eager college coaches. Halfback Bob Krokenberger and center Bob Goudie along with John Deloin are also expected to carry some weight across the endline for Ocean City. THIS YEAR'S NEWEST Raider is quarteback Brian Leypoldt. a three-sport (baseball, wrestling) athlete entering his first season on the varsity squad. Coach Galante says the pressure will be there, but Leypoldt is a strong player who should be able to produce under pressure. The Red Raiders open their season against

Vineland and Galante is looking forward to the start of a new season and a new position. MIDDLE TOWNSHIP is looking to improve on last year's 4-4 record. Head coach Brian Tetley has quality rather than quantity this season. "Small numbers but big players", said Tetley as he introduced Steve Jones (6-1, 270-pounds), Sean Jones (5-10, 205 pounds). Ed Brian (6-lr 195 pounds). Andrew Brockman (6 foot, 210 pounds), and Doug Volgelei (6-3. 245 pounds). The leader of all this muscle will be Mark Hindle. a slotback for the Panthers. Sean Jones will draw much attention as Tetley refers to him as "probably the best in the league". Doug Volgelei. back from a knee injury promises much provided he stays healthy. The Panthers have experience on the ball with senior quarterback Bob Hicks who, according to Tetley. has improved his talents as well as his size (6-3. 185 pounds'. Hicks may also be employed as punter and kicker for the Panthers Senior John Francis will join Hicks in experienced play at splitend and safety. Middle opens up against its two toughest competitors. Oakrest and St. Joe. The first couple weeks of the season will tell Brian Tetley a lot about his team's future. LOWER CAPE MAY

coach Bill Garison has a strong foundation made up of six outstanding seniors. Erich Albert, a defensive end and offensive end is, according to Garison, division I college material. Frank Digilio is also a college prospect at center

and linebacker. "He is presently showing interest in Army," said Garison. "He's a very bright kid as well as an excellent athlete." Other Lower standouts will be Bob Smith at guard and defensive end. Lou

Rodriguez at linebacker, and Mark Schiffbaure at wide receiver and defensive halfback. Kevin Lare will be part of every play as the Caper's quarterback. Three of Lower's five losses last year were to St. Joe, Hammonton and Oakrest, the traditional teams to beat. Lower will face Atlantic City for its ^ opener. WILDWOOD COACH A1 Birch will be relying on three seniors to improve on a 0-7-1 last year record. Paul Franco's name is already being whispered amoungst college coaches. The 6-5, 250 pound defensive tackle was chosen to the All-League team last year. Andre Harris, a Wildwood halfback at 5-9, 160 pounds, Is expected to do good things along with'3center Bill Rinier (6-1, 190 pounds). Wildwood's opener is against Absegami and coach Birch says it will be a tough one. Cape May County football teams will have a lot of impact on the C.A.L. in 1985. Size and talent will meet again for another exciting football season.
