DOT to Check Speed Limit
GREEN CREEK - An agent for the state Department of Transportation has agreed to order a traffic survey of a three-quarter mile stretch of Bayshore Road west of Route* 47 in response to a request from area residents to reduce the speed limit from 50 mph to 35 mph. "We are going to do a survey through the County Engineer^ office." said DOT'S John McCarthy. McCarthy said he will ask Neil O. Clarke, county engineer, to make a random check of the speeds of 100 cars along the road in question. The results. McCarthy said, will be sent to the Bureau of Traffic Engineering in Trenton. McCarthy said not only speeds, but other conditions such as the fact that the road now runs through a residential area will be considered in determining if the limit should be reduced. McCarthy, who declined to comment on whether he believes 50 mph is too fast, said he is familiar with the area. "It's not beyond reason to reduce speeds in an area OCEAN VIEW EMPORIUM [ Variety Store 123 Shore Road , (North of Sea Isle Blvd.) Ocean View < All Summer Merchandise 25% OFF | Cigarettes $1.15 Pack $10.01 Carton Kings , $10.29 Carton 100's Coca-Cola $1.99 ^ Six-Pack 12 oz. i like that. " said McCarthy. Should the need for a ; reduction be established, a i resolution lowering the speed would be prepared ■ for presentation to the i county freeholders. McCar i thy said. ■ "It could take a few monI ths,"hesaid. McCarthy said the survey will be of the area from Ralph s Seafood to I the Green Creek fire station. through to Norbury Landing Road. The request to lower speeds along the road came in the form of a petition from John B. Shaw. 55 Bayshore Road. Green Creek. Shaw sent a petition bearing the names of 56 area residents to DOT's Bureau of Traffic Engineering urging a reduction of speeds along what he called a "dangerous road." I n collecting the signatures for the petition. Shaw said he was confronted "with horror stories of accidents that have occurred over the years due to the high speed limit." Shaw said residents have complained in the past, but nothing was done. "They signed the petition. but they felt that more than likely, no change would take place." Shaw wrote. In the letter, Shaw shid a nine-year-old boy riding a bike was hit by a car and killed on the road on Aug. 18. Shaw said "numerous accidents involving domestic and wild animals" have occurred together with vehicles crashing into stationary objects. The section of road. Shawsaid, "is narrow, crowned, poorly lit, and has no shoulder." High pedestrian and bicycle traffic together with vehicles turning onto the road from a heavily populated area add to the hazards, Shaw said. Shaw said motorists have two sharp curves to negotiate, and are not warned by signs of a firehouse and a playground.
