19th Century Gets A Showcase Week
CAPE MAY - Victorian Week. Oct. 11-20, will turn this entire National Landmark City into a showcase of 19th Century architecture and style. Tours, tours and more tours, sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts, a non-profit historic Masquerade Ball Oct. 26 AVALON — A masquerade ball sponsored by the recreation department is scheduled for Saturday night, Oct. 26, starting 9 p.m. to the music of the Hal David Orchestra. Costumes will be judged in a variety of categories at the event in Community Hall, 30th and Avalon Avenue. For further information call 967-3066. Bird Carving For Seniors CAPE MAY- Bird carving classes for senior citizens sponsored by SAGES (Senior Adults Gaining Education and Stimulation), under the auspices of Atlantic Community College, will start 10:30 a.m. Oct. 2. Photography Instruction CAPE MAY — A new basic photography class. Introduction to Photography will be held by the city 7-8 p.m. Monday at the Cape May Elementary School. The class will be an informal group discussion on such subjects as types of cameras and their operation, films, lenses, filters, flashes and composing. Completion of this course will enable the student to be knowledgeable and confident. taking a better photo that will last a lifetime. This course will be taught by William Szemcsak. Puppet Show AVALON — The recreation department is sponsoring a full feature puppet show 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, in the Community Hall. "The Jungle Book" is performed by Pegasus Productions of New York City. There is no charge for admission. For more information call 967-3066. Following are the numerous ways one can enjoy this display of Victoriana : SELF GUIDED Tours of Historic Houses: Saturday, Oct. 12 and 19 and Sundays, October 13 and 20. On each day. 10 different houses will be open to the public, including such perennial favorites as the elegant Mainstay Inn. the elaborate Abbey, the eclectic Wilbraham Mansion and the museum quality Emlen Physick House. First time on tour this year will be the newly restored John Craig House, the charming Bell Bungalow, the quaint cottage belonging to Norman and Mary Ellen Ledwin, and Pat and Ed Lightcap's anti-ques-filled Prince Edward Apartments on Jackson Street. COTTAGES AT Twilight Tour: Monday evening, Oct. 14. Five of Cape May's most charming homes are open to the public for the evening. Guided by congenial hosts, the visitors will enjoy the Dr. Henry L. Hunt House, Gothic Gables, The Franklin Hughes House, the Joseph . Q. Williams House and Windward House. Mansions by Gaslight Tour: Wednesday evening, Oct. 15. Four of Cape May's landmarks, the Abbey. Mainstay Inn, Wilbraham Mansion and Physick House are opened for this special guided tour, which includes a free trolley shuttle among the houses. WALKING TOURS: Offered daily. Providing an entertaining orientation, these tours are designed for those who like history close up and in detail. Trolley Tours: Offered Daily: Three different tours travel through Cape May's historic districts, including a new Beach Drive tour featuring a century of beach housing, from Victorian cottages to turn-of-
