Variety Keynotes Festival
The third annual New Jersey Wings 'N Water Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday in Several resort towns throughout Cape May County. More than 30 events and demonstrations, including world class decorative bird carvings, dune walks, seaside garden tours and live nature show are just a sampling of the array of activities planned for the twoday festival at the scenic shore resort towns, beaches and wetlands areas. The nation's best wildlife artist will be here. AN OLD FASHIONED seafood dinner, entertainment by the U.S. Coast Guard Band, sunset cruise with naturalists, and retriever demonstrations in the marsh are planned during the fall festival, which draws thousands of visitors and participants from throughout the East Coast. Some of the other events are: Beach and botany walks, wildlife exhibits, maritime art show and sale and, for the kids — fiddler crab races, aquarium workshops and kite flying contests! The festival benefits the Wetlands Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting public understanding and concern for costal life and environments. The festival is headquartered at the Institute in Stone Harbor.
a Federal Duck Stamps On Display
* The Stone Harbor : Borough Hall is the site of * this year's Federal Duck 5 Stamp Collection for the 1 Wings n Water Festival. This private^ollection will * include prints of past duck " stamps, along with actual ■ stamp samples. ■ David Maas, winning ar1 tist of the Second Annual j New Jersey Duck Stamp 1 will have limited edition prints of the 1985 stamp on exhibit and for sale. THE FIRST FEDERAL duck stamp was created by nationally syndicated cartoonist Jay N. "Ding"' Darling, and issued in 1934. The Migratory Bird Conservation Act was enacted by Congress in 1929 to acquire waterfowl refuge lands for protection. The
Migratory Bird Hunting . Stamp Act of 1934, inspired by Darling and his followers, requires every waterfowl hunter from age 16 up to buy and carry a federal duck stamp. Proceeds from these sales purchase, lease, and protect wetlands. Before 1949. the federal government commissioned a top wildlife artist to produce the stamp each year, but since that time, a duck stamp contest has become the government's only continuing art competition. The Festival exhibit of these spectacular prints and stamps is open Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 11-4 at the Stone Harbor Borough Hall, Second Ave. in Stone Harbor.

Marine Lab Open Since 1972, Lehigh University has operated a marine laboratory for teaching and research on the grounds of the Wetlands Institute. The lab is operated year-round and has a permanent staff of two: Dr. Charles M. Wahle, associate director; and Dominic Dragotta, technician. In addition, Dr. Elizabeth Chornesky and Dr. Vincent Guida, both research Scientists at Lehigh, are conducting full-time projects at the lab. The lab director, Dr. Murray Itzkowitz, is a faculty member in Biology, and is based on the main campus in Bethlehem. IN CONJUNCTION with the Wetlands Institute's Wings and Water Festival, the Stone Harbor Marine Laboratory will be open to the public between noon and 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. In addition to various displays of the local flora and fauna, several researchers from Lehigh and elsewhere will be present to demonstrate and explain their research interests in the local waters. The public is invited to see what the laboratory is doing in the local marine environments, and to view the recent program of remodeling and expansion of the laboratory facilities. Caricaturist At Festival Free lance artist John Christie, of Bucks County, PA, will be on hand throughout the Wings 'n Water Festival to draw caricatures of visitors. A salesman by profession. Christie works part time as an editorial cartoonist for the Northeast Times in Northeast Philadelphia.
