STONE HARBOR - World class decorative bird carvers of the mid-Atlantic coast will compete for $2,075 in prizes at the Third Annual New Jersey Wings 'n Water Festival Sept. 21 and 22. The two-day festival, a benefit for the Wetlands Institute, will also feature a wildlife/maritime part competition and sale, duck stamp exhibit, sunset boat cruise, guided nature ' walks, environmental exhibits, and many other activities in the communities of Avalon, Court House, and Stone Harbor. THE CARVERS' exhibit. I located at the Avalon Community Hall. 30th and Avalon Avenue, will feature John Sheeler, multiple winner of the "Best in World!' award at the Ward Foundation's Maryland's show. Retired U.S. Army General Chester B. deGavre of Deep Creek Plantation on the Chesapeake will exhibit his world renowned collection of waterfowl miniatures Jim and Joan Seibert, a highly talented team of . / decorative bird carvers J from South Dennis, will iff display and sell his lifesize '/ works and her miniatures. / OTHER NEW Jersey I carvers include William VanNess of Stone Harbor, Vincent Cianetto of Beverly, Terry McNuIty of Meds ford, James Fox of Burli ington, Jim and Betty Cumming of Titusville, and Joan Wolf of Cape May. Pete Micciche of Morton, PA, is among the many carvers who reside outside of New Jersey. A lifelong / resident of Pennsylvania, ' I Micciche specializes in / songbird and wildfowl carf vings, for which he has received many awards. Also featured will be Ed and Esther Burns, Jerry Albright, and the Veasey V Studios, all of Maryland. \ THESE AND many other ' carvers will display their works in various categories. Decorative car- \ vings are realistic with ex\J act details, and maybe \ lifesize or miniature, which ' is xk lifesize or smaller. Decoys have simplified style and are able to be used in a hunting situation. Non-decorative carvings are not as detailed as decorative, but still appear realistic in a simplified I form. Also exhibited will be ' I antique decoys, which were ' carved in the past and used for hunting. ■■ THE CARVERS will be

competing for the grand prize of $1,000 in the decorative carving category, and other money prizes in the decorative and decoy categories. Judges will look for accuracy in color, size, feather pattern, and design content in the decorative carvings, and accuracy in color and size, ability to float and self-right, structural strength and durability and ease of repainting in the decoy carvings. Prizes will be awarded Saturday. Sept. 21. at the show site.

Rescued Birds Go On Display STONE HARBOR - A red-tailed hawk and a sawwhet owl will be the birdlife stars under the large striped tent at the Wetlands Institute during the Wings 'n Water Festival. They are among 14 exhibits on display this weekend. Each bird is a damaged animal from the Avian Rehabilitation Center in Seaville. Neither of the birds can be returned to the wild because of their handicaps. s WILD BIRDS Rehabilitation and Research Center of Surf City on Long Beach Island will be another exhibitor, as will the New Jersey Raptor Association. All of these organizations are run by Jim and Betsy Jones of Surf City. In addition to the birds, a marine touch tank operated by Wetlands staff members will display several varieties of fish, crabs and other marine life under the tent. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center, Pinelands Commission, Ducks Unlimited, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and New Jersey Wildfowlers will also be featured in the educational exhibits. Stock Up Seed A birdseed sale will be held at the Wetlands Institute on Stone Harbor Boulevard Saturday and Sunday. Patrons can buy now for wintering birds. Sales will be cash and carry in the parking lot.
