Fables Of The Reconstruction (I.R.S.), shows a young band that wants to grow within a set framework. As in the past. R.E.M 's sound revolves around Michael Stipe's mumbling ; vocals (which, believe me. isn't a put-down of his singing) and Peter Buck's airy guitar lines. HOWEVER. RE M. is beginning to take some bold steps, and the eerie string arrangements, occasional funk rhythms, and traditional folk leanings — especially the banjo on "Wendell Gee" - are delightful touches that give R.E.M. more depth. Best of all, the band sounds more relaxed, as if y members actually enjoyed going into the studio. Elvis Presley will always be thought of as a rock and JT roll singer, but he wasn't c I that easy to box in. He # recorded rockabilly, coun- \ try. gospel, pop. and as Reconsider Baby (RCA) proves, he was a prfitty powerful blues singer, too. THE 12 CUTS on this release date between 1954 and 1971. and, throughout, Presley's voice is sharp, clear, and so full of passion one wishes this was a double album Reconsider Baby is more informal than the usual music Presley is generally remembered for, and it's a treat to hear him improvise lyrics and melody lines. Rhino (1201 Olympic Blvd., Santa Monica, CA. 90404) has just issued Rick Nelson's Greatest Hits and it's nice to report tunes such as "Hello Mary Lou" Travelin' Man and "Teenage Idol" still sound fresh and fun. NELSONS ACE was, and for that matter still is. his voice which always / made him sound as just V "one of the guys" Now if \ I only some television stat v tion would show reruns of "The Adventures Of Ozzie & Harriet"

want to order Garage Sale (ROIR, 611 Broadway, New York, N Y. 10012), a cassette compilation of present day bands who base their music on the works of The Byrds, Music Machine, Seeds, Rolling Stones, Raiders, et al. MAKE NO mistake about it, these aren't revivalists like Sha Na Na. but young bands who are making vital music. All of these groups compose their own material, using their influences to shape their sound. A few of these acts, most notably The Fuzztones, Vipers. Mosquitos, and The Pandoras, are already making names for themselves and it shouldn't , be too long before a couple a of them creep onto the a charts. RIOR is a cassette-only label and readers who are 9 looking for something out 3 of the ordinary are en- bB couraged to write for its jjH impressive catalog.
