SPORTS by SUE McKinley Cape Girls Tennis Has New Faces This Year
Girls tennis is underway and our five Cape May County teams are warming up as the weather cools down. Lower Cape May has many positions to fill after losing six of last year's varsity players. The 1984 champions will be less experienced, but coach Lionel Desrosiers is anxious to rebuild a winning team. Two returning players for Lower Cape May are Jill Escher and Cheri Sheppard. both singles players. Intra-squad challenge matches will decide who plays third singles. For now it's a tossup between Kelly Rasmussen. Linda Halbe and Kirsen Flickinger. Coach Desrosiers has a lot to chose from when picking a second doubles team. Four juniors are working to win those two positions. Joel MacDonald, Jennifer Hayes, Donna Adams and Barb Embs will Shufflers Compete Sept. 23-27 OCEAN CITY - An International Shuffleboard Tournament with teams from Japan, Canada and the United States competing will be held here Sept. 23-27 at beach front courts, 6th Street. be a good group to pick from and coach Desrosiers will have his team on paper and a whole new season to work on. WILDWOOD CATHOLIC'S 1 1-8 last-year record is being defended by first-year coach Donna Cappo and a whole returning squad. This year's only addition will be sophomore Michelle Miller, who is still seeking a comfortable playing position. Theresa and Kathleen Ward were last year's first doubles team as freshmen. This year the twin duo should be a tough pair to contend with. Other Crusader veterans include Thia Sandford, and Ljz Buchanan (last year's first and second singles players) Michelle Brzysk, Jenny Dean and Holly Strokes. To coach Cappo. they're all new faces but to the Cape Atlantic League (C.A.L.) they're a familiar nemesis. Wildwood tennis coach Jill Alexander has one position to refill in the second singles slot and the Warriors can begin their efforts to improve on last year's 3-13 record. Two seniors, eight sophomores and two juniors will be playing each other to determine playing positions. A late start due to postponed physicals had coach Alexander making some quick decisions to prepare for game one yesterday at Hammonton. Wildwood seniors Laurie Krah and Beth Marotta will start off as first and second singles players. Other positions will be filled by Merry Strokes, Meg Johnson. Dana Einhaus and Shey Petrella. according to Alexander. With experience to work with, Alexander says it will be a rebuilding year for the Warriors. MIDDLE TOWNSHIP has six returning varsity players with very good reputations. Senior Tracy Yarborough is swinging for number one after a 16-1 last year record for second place in the league. Helen Lloyd will be moving up from third to second singles after a good perfor mance last year. Third singles will be chosen between two practicing for the position. Tracy Greenwalt and Michelle Clayton are both very good sophomores to chose from. Doubles players for the Panthers are Karen McVey, Gail Louge. and Missy Whittington. Middle coach Dennis Campbell is filling in for what looks like a winning season. With Sacred Heart
and Lower Cape May entering rebuilding seasons with new faces, coach Campbell expects his veterans to rise above last year's third place seat. ANOTHER handful of experience is Ocean City, where only one player from last year's 8 8 squad graduated. Twelve-year coach Jenny Nicholes has her team into position ready to serve a winning season to the C.A.L. The Raiders consist of Linda King. Kellie Ross and Kelly llasbrouck playing singles. Teaming up for first doubles will be Tory Frank and Lianne Flemming. Any Yancant will join Karen Yallese in second doubles to wrap up the Red Raider team. Coach Nicholes is looking forward to a new season sure to improve on last year's 50 percent winnings Last year's Cape May County graduates have left a lot of empty seats on the tennis benches, so the C.A.L. will have a new look in 1985. This season's outcome will be something to witness.
