Do you get wax in your stew? Yes, Wax! You know, when you have to peer into the kettle to see how the stew is doing, so you tip the candle in... and... plop — you've got wax in your stew. Apparently this was a common enough household

problem that it led to the invention of the "Betty" lamp, which was suspended by a wire over the fireplace, and lowered into the kettle. It was a small pewter lamp, fueled by a bit of animal fat or fish oil; thus, no wax in your stew. '• The need to conquer c rather than curse the t darkness has challenged < Man's ingenuity from Pro- t metheus to the laser. The I fruits of this ingeniousness F can be found in Caf>e May v County's antique shops ^ where there is as dazzling s an array of candlesticks, lamps and lighting fixtures f as can be found anywhere, t FOR CENTURIES and t centuries, the only ad- t vancements in lighting s were more and better \ candles: double wick v candles, reflecting I sconces, candles with mirrors (girandoles), hur- j wicane globes to keep the i flame stable, magnifying I glo"bes to make the flame ' larger, and multicandle | devices like the , candelabrum and the , chandelier These were made of 1 every material you can im- | agine. and they still are be ( ing made because, despite the space age, candles are 1 still a useful, beautiful and 1 sometimes symbolic pari of our lives When major advances in lighting came, they came quickly, all in the 19 century gas could be central ly generated and distributed throughout a ci ty by 1820: petroleum was discovered in Pennsylvania in 1859. and Thomas Edison's first 85 customers were hooked -up and lighting with electric power in 1882 — just over 100 years ago. THE ERA OF T11E GASLIGHT is the Victorian period Lighting was stationery — fixed to the walls or the ceiling where the gas pipes ran Most of these fixtures are lost to us; they were- removed and cappjedup as stationary lighting became unfashionable or impractical [ For movable lighting the \ Victorians used oil lamps, j It was these lamps which L

electrified when the conversion was made, and these lamps which were copied when the first electric lights were made. They glass globes, hand painted, frosted, or etched with fanciful designs in the or Art Nouveau style. IN THE 1920s, after the World War, and with the advent of Art Deco. we to see electric lights that look like electric lights we now know them. Well, there really is no one to make an electric each decade in this

century has interpreted lighting differently. There was a movement among decorators in the recent past to make lighting invisible — always recessed, or from a hidden source. I can't agree. Lighting fixtures can be beautiful and decorative. Lamps from the '20. through the '50s are fascinating pieces of sculptured Americana — objects of art that transcend their function. Choose them wisely. NEXT WEEK: Just what is Art Deco? And can you see any of it here in Cape May County? (Arthur Schwerdt, coowner of The August Far m house, on Route 9 in Swainton, invites questions c/o this newspaper.)
