E.F.HUTTON talks... 1 I — OL I P&J-, Mayor Insensitive To The Kditor: I found Cape May Mayor Arthur Blomkvest's comment in your Aug. 28 issue on the annual arts and crafts shiw very insensitive and unkind We personally walked the full length of the promenade and saw nothing that deserved the label "flea market." The only complaint might be that there was a duplica lion of crafts at the show on Aug 17 and 18 This, however, does not reflect on the exhibitors, hut on the managers of the show who permitted this to happen You realize, of course, the participants each paid a fine lee lo enter il and. I am told, were not given a rebate for the rainy Sunday that prevented them from displaying their wares. Mayor Hlomkvcst owes them an apology MRS. K.K. SPEGELK Belle Vernon. Pa.
Mayor Insensitive To The Editor: In response to your article in the Aug. 28 issue. I was very surprised to read of Mayor Arthur Blomkvest's feel ings re the annual art and craft shows His comment likening Ihe crafl show lo a "town full of yard sales" was particularly noted Nol only is thai denigration undeserved, il shows a distinct lack of sen sitivity There is a world of difference between items displayed at a typical yard sale (usually old and/or used) and the handcrafted goods exhibited at art/eraft shows I have vaea boned in the Cape May area for over :M) years, and whenever possible. I try lo Ik- in town for Ixilh shows The mayor's attitude regarding these events is verv disappotnlmg MRS T 1MPKRATO North Plainfield

By RICHARD GICI.IANO President Cape May County Chamber of Commerce I-abor Day has come and gone The season is marked with highs and lows, good times and bad times. It has been a year of mixed emotions. lx?t us now take some time to reflect on our experiences and withdraw some useful information and conclusions May and June started the summer season at a brisk pace. Record attendance at the information center indicated that the area in general was enjoying a healthy start to the season. July slowed down There were people but not in the crushing numbers that most seasoned business people expected. Room reservations and restaurant attendance were down. Attendance at the information center was very brisk. 40 percent above past years. However, the clientele had changed. Most information seekers were interested in daily attractions and short time accomodations. Al'Gl'ST BEGAN with an increase of tourists, hut not to the levels we hoped for The pollution problems did not benefit anyone for the last week in August and l^abor dayweekend seemed to be very poor. I must attribute some of the poor I^ibor Day weekend to the previous ban on swimming along Wildwood Beaches due lo sewage pollution. The problems has been a long time developing and there does not seem to be an easy or fast solution. Even though the Wildwoods were the hardest hit. all the communities in the county could face the same situations. We need your support, your input, and any extra time you might be willing to lend to help us examine the problems of our area, propose solutions and follow the progress of our city leaders until there are some answers We have been warned all along and many of us have seen the signs but we sat back and let someone else handle the situation Our livelihoods are threatened and also the existence of the entire county's major resource < tourism > unless we make sure we have a good solution We must work together now to prevent a re-occurrence of the situation -• - Letters Welcome a I In- Met aid lantern and Dispatih wok omo lot 1 tors in the editor on matters of puhlu interest.
