Dinner to Benefit Cape Memorial
CAPE MAY - Members of the public are invited to join with fishermen, friends of fishermen and their families at a dinner in the Golden Eagle Hotel and Restaurant here Friday evening. Preview Of Tests Offered COURT HOUSE - This fall nearly 1.5 million students across the United States who take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) will have a special opportunity to familiarlize themselves with the testing format also used on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SATi. The PSAT/NMSQT will he given at Middle Township High School 9 am Saturday. Oct. 19. Students can "preview" the exam process for the SAT the prerequisite for many college-bound students, said David C. Blood, director of guidance. T II It O l G II T II K PS AT NMSQT students are selected for the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Program, which enables talented students to compete for scholarships. and Hispanic students are considered for the National Hispanic Scholar Awards Program, funded through a $2 1 million grant from the An d r e w W Mellon Foundation In addition, students can use the test as a guide to see how they ranked na t tonally among other students As preparation for the UNI minute, two part test, students receive a Student Bulletin containing a complete sample test with an answer key and scoring instructions

T H E M EMORIAL. already designed and committed for completion in Cape May City at the foot of Missouri Avenue where it meets Cape May Harbor, is expected to become an East Coast landmark When completed the granite memorial statue will stand 11 feet tall and weigh 17 tons. The structure will depict a fisherman's wife and children standing closely together while gazing out into the harbor and sea beyond. Cost of the project is estimated at $150,000 including site preparation and development. Completion is planned for fall of 1986. THE FISHERMAN'S dinner will begin with cocktails at 5. Music will be by the Skip Kehr band. For ticket information, call Jeff Reichle at 729-9050 Sponsors of this effort embarked on the project over a year ago when a group of fishermen and their friends agreed that after more than 350 years and dozens of lives lost, time was long overdue to stop talking about a major memorial and start working to see it completed. THE VOLUNTEER members of the memorial project stressed that the committee is a cooperating but completely independent and non-profit group Corporate by-laws mandate that its hoard of directors must be professional fishermen or fishing industry members by majority number The group is in no wayconnected with any govern inenl body or government sponsored project It operates solely from community support and contributions Except for the generous granting of the site properly by the Cape May CityCouncil. the Fisherman's Memorial Committee has never asked for tax sup ported grants or other forms of indirect tax sponsored monies and will not do so in the future
College Info Night Ahead COURT HOUSE - David G. Blood, director of guidance at Middle Township High School, announced that the annual College Information Night will be held 7:30 p.m tomorrow in the school cafeteria. Officials from Stockton State College will discuss the "ins and outs" of applying for and being accepted by a college Juniors, seniors and their parents who attend the high school and are planning to attend college are urged to attend. Students who do not attend Middle Township High School but live in the area served by the School are also welcome.
