From The Principal By Stanley Kotzen Principal, Lower Cape May Regional High School
Academic good news, like so many other things of value, comes in small packages. Specifically, the mail produced two manila envelopes sent by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and the Admission Testing Program of the college board. The news contained inside listed our National Merit Scholarship semifinalist and commended students and the results of the Scholastic Aptitude Test that was taken by our graduating class of '85 The news was encouraging. FIRST OP' all. seven of our youngsters were named by the NMSC. Kim Wells was identified as our National semi-finalist by scoring in the top 375 students from among 52.791 New Jersey high school juniors tested in October. 1984. Kim is now one of 15.000 students nationwide who will compete for $21 million in scholarships awarded to 5.800 finalists. iMark Ilalbruner '85 was a winner last year. ) OUR SEVEN commended students who were among 35.000 recognized nationally for scoring in the top 5% of those taking the test were: Patricia Mason. Michael lludgins. l.u.Ann Cherry. Patricia Miller. Frank DiGilio. and Daniel MacEIrevey. From more than a million students tested nationally these are the very best, and their accomplishment reflects the pride that they have brought to their families and their school There was more good news in the fact that the SAT scores locally and nationally showed their biggest gain in 22 years. THE SCHOLASTIC Aptitude Test is taken each November by all collegebound seniors, and the results in decline have been the topic of numerous books and studies on the failure of contemporary public education. Hopefully. this year's report is the harbinger of better times for all students and their performance on this significant test. For our class of '85 we saw a 22-poinl growth in the average verbal score (445) in the test and a 27-point growth (474) in the math section. These results were accomplished by 11 percent more (111) of our seniors taking the test. IN COMPARING LCMR seniors • with all collegebound seniors in the state, our class of '85 scored 20 points higher than the state average in the verbal section and 10 points higher in the math. Across the country there was a growth of 5 points in the verbal section and 4 points in the math, a fact that was reported at the bottom of Page 30 in the area newspaper.
