Governor Tom Kean's visit to Middle Township was the climactic event of the 15th Annual Cape May County Republican Picnic at the County Park Sept 15. All five members of the board of freeholders had their work cut out for them at the Sunday event as Director Jerry Thornton handed out the plates. Jame Kilpatrick collected the tickets, Ralph Kvans handed out the rolls. Kill Sturm served the barbeque chicken, and Chuck Frederick served the tomatoes to the approximately 2.500 people who walked through the "cafeteria style" line. chief organizer and master of ceremonies. UNCLE FLOYD was the celebrity entertainer who played the piano, sang, and joked before the group. He has his own television show on the New Jersey Network. Uncle Floyd personally autographed and handed out pictures of himself and his sidekick. "Oogie". Skip Kehr and the Four Most played easy listening dance music during most of the afternoon. K O B 11 O D G K S . president-elect of the Court House Kiwanis Club, along with current president Tony Devico. and former district governor Frank Boss were the three representatives from the local club who attended the 68 th Annual Kiwanis District Convention at Bally's Park Place in Atlantic City during the weekend of Sept 6 Hodges attended all of the training sessions that were held for incoming presidents at the convention Jim Washington from the Cape May Kiwanis Club was re-elected as district treasurer THE MIDDLE Township High School Marching Band, under the direction of Bichard P. l.udwig. won the championship again in the 108th Annual New Jersey Firemen's Parade in Wildwood Sept 14 This is the sixth year in a row that the band has won first prize in this competition. It is unbelievable that one band can make such a lasting impression on the judges.' remarked Ludwig He was referring to the fact that the MTHS Marching Band performed at the beginning of the parade and that five hours later high school bands were still marching past the reviewing stand. The MTHS Band won $700 as its first prize award in addition to the $400 it was paid for merely marching in the parade The Annual Firemen's Parade offers more top prize money and awards than any other parade in the state, according to l.udwig The local band has been competing in the parade since 1974 and placed either second or third during 1974 through 1979 before its first place winning streak began in 1980 W'E WISH our friends Charlie and Kale Yan Meter of Dias Creek a very "Happy Anniversary!" BAKER of Swainton was sworn in as district governor at the 21st Annual New Jersey District Optimist Convention held at the Golden Eagle Inn in Cape May Sept 14. Baker's keynote speech was entitled "Communication and Growth Within the Optimist Clubs". Baker's wife. Dessie. along with two of his daughters. Victoria and Carla Jean, attended his swearing-in ceremonies. We wish Mayor Mike Voll and his wife Susan a very "Happy Anniversary!" We also want to wish Committeeman Charles Leusner and his wife Carla a belated 'Happy Anniversary!" THE FIRST game of the Middle Township Football League was played Sept. 8 at Memorial Field in Court House. Dawn Smearman is the Panther's coach and Kathy Belles is the cocoach. Paige Springer is captain of the team's cheerleading squad and Crystal Sheldon co-captain. the Panthers' Cheerleaders for the 1985 season are Stephanie Brown. Sherry Spaulding. Becky Crafts. Jessie Harris. Mauriel Brown, Shirley Dougherty. Lisa Brown. Yvonne Adams. Kim Roach. Nicole Lynch. Mary Harris. Crystal Hodges, and Monica Jackson. The Cheerleaders' mascots are Jamie Adams and Tasha Spizey. The list of the Bobcats' Cheerleaders was printed in my column Aug 28 The league's season will last until late November ELEMENTARY School 1 is offering an "After-School Enrichment" Program sponsored by the PTA The first session will run for five weeks. Oct. 1-31. with classes meeting once each week per course immediately following the dismissal of school until 4:30 p.m. The courses being offered are Basic Computer for first graders only. Beginning Spanish will teach kindergarten and first grade students everyday vocabulary and conversation through game playing, songs, and oral repetition. Beginners' Sign Language will teach second graders the basics of sign language Storytelling will teach kindergarten and first grade students its principals. Introduction to French will teach second and third graders everyday vocabulary and convsation. \ PICNIC will be held for all Middle Township employes and their families at the County Park Oct i> Softball, volleyball, and horseshoes will be played, and an "old fashioned" cookout will take place. This event was developed by township committee to allow employes and their families a "get-together."

The enrollment has increased by 42 students at Elementary School 3. There are a record 100 students enrolled in the school's band program, according to Lesley Weber, the school's band director. The Cape May County Democratic Organization will hold its annual dinner at Urie's Fish Fry Restaurant Oct. 1. They are now on the way to their new station. Fort Bragg, N.C. Mike Bennett. Jack's brother, returned home a month ago from Okinawa. He is a lieutenant in the Marine Corps. Mike is now on his way to his new station, El Toro, Ca. Jack and Mike are the sons of Pat Bennett of Rio Grande. For reservations call 465-5579 or 465-5255 The students, along with the staff and faculty at Elementary School 3. gave principal Henry Kobik a "surprise" birthday party before school was dismissed Sept. 18 Dr Ted Johnson, school superintendent, requested Kobik to come to the Administration Building while the party was being setup at the school When the preparation was completed, Kobik was summoned to go immediately to the school's gym as an emergency situation was taking place. Kobik entered the gym and was greeted by the entire student body and staff holding up cards and banners. He was also greeted and "ballooned" by "Big Bird". The staff had presented him with a cake in the morning. "It was an unbelievable surprise.
