outdoors with Lou Rodi a. Fish Still Plentiful as Season Changes v

The fishing reports con tinue to pour in. All are positive. There are lots of fluke and w e a k f i s?h Bluefish are plentiful. Sea bass and blackfish are on the wrecks i n good numbers. There are some bonilo and albacore plus some big blues for the trolling boats Surf fishing has started to pay off Back bay water temperatures are up and the fishing has slowed down A few bigger fluke are being caught There are loads of sea bass < lots

are small i. occasional weakfish and some small snapper blues Back bay diehards are reporting a few kingfish. SOME BI.OWFISH have also been reported by the kingfish fraternity That's good news, because when there are blowfish around, they make for lots of fun for kids and grownups alike And they are fine dating besides Hopefully, the first fewwill herald an upswing in the numbers for next year While it is too soon to start

fishing for them, remember that small hooks (No. 6 to No. 10 Pacific Bass for example! with a long shank are a must for blowfish. Their bite is such that shortshanked hooks are bitten off at the leader lots of times by the blowfish. Use small pieces of clam or small pieces of bloodworm or squid for blowfish. The nice weather we have been enjoying has kept water temperatures up in the back bays. It has also helped keep crabbing at a peak Crabbing right inow is as good as it has been all season long. MINNOWS: One of the first signs of the season winding down is a shortage of minnows. Many of the places which normally handled minnows stopped selling them. Not because there was no market or because there were no minnows available. Actually, minnow suppliers stopped ^ delivering suddenly, leavf ing lots of stores and marinas with no bait. If you have time and know you are going fishing, you might buy a minnowtrap and catch some of your own. Minnows are still a fine bait and it will make a big difference in the results if you fish for fluke without them lots of days. BAY BI.UKS: One of'the fisheries which gets little attention on the JerseyCape is one which is just starting to open up That is the influx of big slammer blues which move into Delaware Bay each fall. Most of the bay fishermen have packed it in before the big blues arrive, and those who are out fishing the bay are generally fishing for weeks and fluke and are not prepared for the slashing attack of a blue which might weight 10 to 20 lbs Weakfish- fluke gear may fail under a big blue attack The sharp teeth of a bluefish chop off the leader or the light line which is generally in use pops when a slammer hits Bl'T FOB those who go forth into the bay prepared to do battle with big blues

can enjoy exciting fishing. I Drift a slab of bunker or a J whole bunker, butterfish. ' mackerel chunk or cut or i whole mullet in. the tide. Use a little bit of lead to keep the bait just below the [ surface and off the bottom. Some anglers fish these big blues from an anchored boat. Others will fish while drifting. Some use chum. While there are usually good numbers of big blues, they are generally not schooled up as we find them in the ocean. REPORTS: Sea Isle City-based anglers fishing on the Capt. Robbins report good to excellent sea bass and blackfish catches. Kelly Bass of Philadelphia boated 44 sea bass. Bob Francis of Harleysville. Pa., has 32 sea bass and blackfish The Capt Rob bins is sailing daily at 8 a.m. The Friday night bluefish trips have also been producing high numbers. Joe Iannone and Dan Fennimoire, both of Swainton, shard 37 blues from eight to 12 lb. The Capt. Robbins is sailing on Friday nights only for blues. Grassy Sound: At Dad's Place. Grassy Sound. Gary McAnenv of Philadelphia caught an 8-lb. 5'2 oz fluke, in Grassy Sound. Bud Dunham reported that there were lots of sea bass, snapper blues, occasional weakfish and occasional fluke being caught STRATHMKRK: Candy Jankowski at Frank's Boats reported a variety of fish being caught along with some excellent crabbing. Frank's Boats will remain open through the coming weekend Candy reports some bigger fluke being caught Edith Gordon. of Ellenton. Fla . reported a 7'4 -lb fluke on minnow bait Her doormat was caught at Corson's In let Candy also reported a few kings and a few blowfish. AVAI.ON : Stan Penska. at Avalon Anchorage, reported bigger fluke in the past few days. Paddy's Hole is one hot spot John Itoseiti of Clermont boated an8'3-lb fluke On the same trip, his I niece. Carol Shute Kosetti. I also of Clermont, caught I one which weighed 7'. -lb I in the same area CAP K MAY: Dick ■ l.ynch. of Wildwood Cam- ' pground in Court House, was one of the high hookers on a recent trip on the Sea Star II out of South JerseyManna Dick Baer of M e c h a n i c s b u r g . Pa . caught 37 fluke, according to Capt Bob Shumann. He 1 said there are still plenty of weakfish and fluke to be caught in Delaware BayLately. bigger fish have been showing up on the Delaware side Pools go to one-to five-pound weakfish The Sea Star ll sails daily at 9 a m The Miss Cape May is also sailing daily at South Jersey Marina. The boat leaves for all day trips at 8 a.m. for fluke and weakfish Happv Days fares are enjoying good catches of fluke and weakfish Pools went to Allen Boh en of Court House. John Austin, of Philadelphia, and Ernie I Barnett of Upper Darby, r Pa Chuck Snyder of Philadelphia led the Keenan's Tavern Charter

with a pool-winning fluke. Bruce Palton, of Edgely. Pa., caught a five-pound pool-winning fluke to lead the Rohm and Haas Happy Days charter. The Happy Days will sail daily at 8 a.m. and is now taking charters for 1986 and reservations for 1986 shark trips. BAY HOT SPOTS: Bug Light is but one of the many bay hot spots. There is also a good concentration of weakfish at No. 9 and No. 10 buoys. Minnows will still take a lot of fluke and they have been a good substitute for bay weakfish as well Many anglers have switched to minnow-squid combos for weaks. particularly those who had been enjoy-

ing good catches on sheddar crab. POOLS: Pools are part of the party and charter boat heritage. Simply stated, pools are money collected from individual fares on a fishing trip. The money is put into a pot. The proceeds go to the angler catching the biggest fish. There are variations. Some pools are split between the biggest fish in more than one species. Some pools limit the kinds of fish that are eligible. OTHERS MAKE the pool available for only an "edible" fish. And that too should be defined. The socalled trash fish which are (Page 43 Please)
