SPORTS by SUE McKinley Red Raider Runners Eye Return To Top

Cape May County cross country runners are striding into a new season at a very strong pace. The Ocean City Raiders have a name to live up to. After winning five consecutive league titles in Division I, the Raiders settled for a second place finish last year. Now, with three first year runners and a lot of experience, the traditional crushers are looking for their old seat at the top. SENIOR Joe Wright and juniors Greg Kelly and Tod Titus are the captains for O.C. and all excellent athletes, according to seventh-year coach Bill Morland. Senior Joe Dougherty, who has been running since his freshman

year, will also be a key to the team'-s success. Sophomore Steve McMurray doesn't have experience under his belt, but he's got air under his sneakers and three years to provide for the Raiders. Sophomore Anthony Johnson is another young runner, but not unexposed to the track. COACH MORLAND refers to Johnson as a could-be star after seeing his performance during track season last spring. Johnson's first shot at the 3.1-mile run looks promising. Two other runners making their first appearances in Ocean City are Bridgeton transfer Alexis Dudley and Ken Henry. The two senior newcomers are in Morland's top group preparing to repossess the title. LOWER CAPE May coach Jim Ridgway has three runners doing the 3.1 mile course in the 17-minute range and three runners running it in the 18-minute range. With times like that. Ridgway has a season to look forward to. Lower's best and one of the top runners in the league is senior Joe Bresan. The 880 spring runner will be a tough fall contender in the Cape Atlantic League (C.A.L.). Two excellent seniors out for their first season are Chris Hail and Mike Reeb. Hall, also a track hurdler, looks to be Lower's number two runner. Reeb will be joining Hall in picking up the Caper's pace this season. FIRST-YEAR runners, sophomore Dave McColgan and senior Rich Demmers are also at the top of the list, according to Ridgway. "They're all good rnners and they're going to make us a very competitive team this year, even against Buena and St. Augustine, and I'd say St. Augustine is the best in the league. We tied for fourth last year. This year we're shooting for third. With some luck, we may even be a potential second," commented Ridgway. IT'S HARD to tell exactly where Wildwood stands in the CAL. You might just say they had an inconsistent season in 1984. "All the teams we lost to during the season, we beat in the county meet," said coach James Emory. So last year's 3-7 record may not tell it all for the Wildcats' future. Emory has three seniors

leading the pack; Robert Spalding. Steve Gains and Aaron Meyer are all top runners. FIRST-YEAR runner Scott Sawyer is a hopeful for Emory. "He's been running well in pre season and he looks promising." Sophomores round out Wildwood's top runners. John Cerrone, Steve Allen and Ed Bradley will also be the names to listen for in 1985. Wildwood's boardwalk and beach course should be run in under 20 minutes for the Wildcats to be competitive and coach Emory says he has capable runners. THE MIDDLE Township Panthers have a past record of 2-8 to improve upon. Head coach Basil Gugliari says he has some new runners and some experienced runners joining for what should be a better season. Two transfer students "will be running into some competition as Panthers. Mike Rash from Pennsylvania brought with him a good pair of running sneakers and Brian Schmid. a junior transfer from Wildwood Catholic, changed colors but not his stride for the 1985 season. Fourth-year runner Joe Accard and Jim Dean are experienced Panthars. They'll be leading this year's team to better (Page 46 Please)
