CCC Workshops On Test Anxiety

VINELAND — A program addressing test anxiety is underway at Cumberland Community College. The program, which runs through Oct. 3, is free and open to the public. The program consists of three workshops titled "Restructuring the Role of Tests," "Improving TestTaking Skills," and "Relaxing and Maintaining Full Recall." "Research has shown that these are the three critical areas people must master to be successful in tests," CCC Counselor Steven Stolar said, adding that participants are urged to attend all three workshops.

DURING THE first workshop, participants will be urged tb share their feelings of anxiety toward test taking with others present. Handouts which illustrate how irrational notions can be replaced by more sensible thoughts will be provided. "Improving Test-Taking Skills" will * offer actual methods to improve the odds of excelling on examinations. Participants will learn that neumonic devices can aid memory. Other methods will include time management principles, organization of course materials, study room environment and note taking skills. STOLAR NOTED that many people don't really 1 relax unless they are asleep. That's a reason he incorporated the third workshop, "Relaxing and Maintaining Total Recall," into the program, he said. Participants of this final workshop will learn to identify physical signs of stress and how to control them. Stolar will introduce and explain the Jacobson progressive relaxation method and the Schade method of relaxation. Biofeedback machinery will be used to aid relaxation. THE COUNSELOR noted that people must take various forms of tests throughout their lives, and they can be more successful if they know testtaking skills. Participants may attend the first workshop 5-7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30; the second 5-7 p.m. Oct. 2; and the third 2 to 4 p.m. Friday or 5-7 p.m. Oct. 3. Advance registration is preferred.
