The question this week is just what is going on with the Cultural Arts Center. An engineering report found that the second and third floors of the ol^ Wesley Avenue School, where the center is located, were structurally unsound. So the center had to be vacated for classes. Some classes will be held at the Historical Museum and other places. (For information, call 399-7628.) The center's offices have been moved to City Hall. The question being asked is: "is something else going on?" SOME PEOPLE are saying there's a plan to tear down the building and build duplexes on the site, and if true, there could be some big profits here. Mayor Jack Bittner said that this talk is just ludicrous. And the city will find a place for the center. Another question being League Events Slated CAPE MAY — A series of events for the coming weeks, including an event to honor those involved in the annual Old House Tour, has been announced by the Cape May County Art League. The homeowners, hostesses and volunteers for the house tour will be honored at a buffet supper at the league 6 p.m. Sunday. The general membership is welcome. Other events scheduled are: PASTEL WORKSHOP with Jacqueline Chesley. Victorian artists. 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday. Oct. 26. Registration must be made by Saturday, Oct. 19. Seminar on the restoration of paintings and frames given by the Washington Conservation Studio. 7-10 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15. IN KIDSTART — Kids Teaching Kids — 1-2 p.m. Saturday Oct. 19, students of Mary Lou Walter at Teitelman School, Erma, will plan a project of grapevine wreaths. Call 884-8628 for more information. Also on Oct. 19. the drawing for the raffle of Lucille Hansberry's painting. "White Roses", will be held at the League headquarters 4 p.m. Tickets are still available. Painting Workshop SWAINTON - A multimedia painting workshop will be conducted at Learning's Run Gardens on Route 9 9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturday. Oct. 5. The session is sponsored by the Cape May County Art League, 1050 Washington St., Cape May. Ms. Federici is an art instructor with the Art League. Ocean City Arts Center, and the City of Wildwood, and gives individual art lessons.
asked is: "Why didn't city planner John Gideonse apply for state funds to renovate the building?" Bittner is planning to run for reelection and some of his supporters say this is all just the start of the campaign to discredit the mayor. SO IT LOOKS as if it may be a lively campaign. Consider the "Blue Laws", the center closing, and the beaches, which are in need of some work. So many new people (casino workers, people who retired ) now live here fulltime, that the voter make-up is drastically changing. BLUE LAW fight probably will go on for months. The Blue Law' binding referendum, to be on the Nov. 5 ballot, was tabled, meaning City Council, wants the non-binding referendum on the ballot. So Ocean City residents can give some indication of what they want. If a law should be passed, there will be immediate lawsuits by businessmen to overturn the law. It looks as if there will be a story on the "Blue Law" status weekly for the next six months. PLANE PARKING lot to be expanded at the Ocean City Airport, at a cost of $469,000. The good news is that the Federal Aviation Administration will pay for 90 percent of this, with the city paying 5 percent and the state the remaining 5 percent. Guess why this is needed? Because more people are flying into the city. The Friends of Music of the Ocean City Cultural Arts Center plan a classical concert series for fall and winter. Concerts include the father-son string combination of Joseph Lanza Sr. and Jr. 3 p.m. Nov. 17 in the Flanders Hotel music room. THE LIFEGUARD Association and the city have tentatively agreed on a contract. This affects the 107 guards, eight lieutenants and six medics. The contract is for 1986 and 1987, with everyone getting a raise next year. The International Shuffleboard Tournament is being held right here, in Ocean City, Sept. 23-27 at the 6th Street beachfront courts. Teams are here from the U.S.. Japan and Canada. Tom Jackson is head of the OC shuffleboard Club. A new department store will be built in the 800 block of As bury Avenue. The Dolaway Shops were sold to B&B Department Stores. David Davidson, owner of B&B, said the store will be a full-line department store and will featurfe all sizes of men's, women's and children's clothing, as well as accessories and jewelry. The Ocean City Chamber voted on the Sunday question, and 61 percent of the members are in favor of businesses being open Sundays. Seventeen members
( or 20 percent ) favor closed Sundays, said chamber prez Elsie Gillespie. The OC Garden Club recently installed Adelene Schaefer as the new president.
