Hold fast to dreams, For when dreams die. Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly. — Langston Hughes If you have a wild, new idea, you can always be sure of one thing. People will say it won't work and they'll tell you how to do it. Well, Dean Schoenewald, 24, of Ocean City, has been dressing up in his "Bird Brain" outfit and going to Philadelphia Eagle games since 1979. He wanted to be the team's mascot. The outfit is a bird costume, with feathers, wings, a beak. FOR YEARS, and for some unknown reason, the old Eagles ownership ignored Dean. But he kept on going to games, getting his picture in the papers, trying to become official. For years, he was ignored — except by the press — and even had to pay for his own tickets to go to the game. But persistence usually pays off, if you can wait. Dean was at a game and the new owner, Norman Braman, called him to his executive box. It was a memorable moment for Dean. Bramam said they wanted hium to try out as the team's mascot. If he catches on, it would become official. WHAT A deal it could be. T-shirts, personal appearances, commercials, performing at every Eagle game. After six years, victory is in sight. "This is a great chance for me," said Dean. The dream never died. And it won't die, he says, even if the Eagles don't hire him as their official mascot. AS OCEAN CITY continues to grow, more sewage means problems. Now Wesley Manor, a senior citizens residential health care complex, is expanding, and must get an OK from the Department of Environmental Protection to build. Planned: to demolish 15 twin living units and replace them with an apartment building and a health care unit. Ocean City is fast becoming a haven for senior citizens. BICYCLE RIDERS pedaled from Philadelphia to Ocean City to raise money for the Greater Delaware Valley Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Some 500 bicyclists rode to Ocean City. They raised over $100,000 for this cause. First person to get to Ocean City was Tony Jones, who made the trip in a little over three hours. Also making the trip was WCAU-TV newsman Larry Kane. • • • INDIAN SUMMER Weekend will be held Friday through Sunday. The Ocean City Retail Merchants Assn. and the City Tourism Commission are sponsoring the event. For information, call 39SM5111, ext. 222.

There will be a seafood festival, a block party, treasure hunt, antique auto show, games for children and lots of entertainment. Merchants will be selling end-of-season specials at tables in front of their stores.

The treasure hunt is for children and families and starts at 11:30 in front of the Music Pier. THE CITY Council doesn't want guests cooking in hotel rooms. It's a way, some think, to keep

people from living in the j hotel-motel zone I permanently. The law says a transient ' is a guest who stays in a guest house, hotel or motel no more than 120 consecutive days, or no more than 200 days out of a given year.
