From The Principal I By Stanley Kotzen Principal, Lower Cape May Regional High School
Gloria came to school last Thursday. The monster hurricane didn't hit until Friday, but its effect on school was considerable one day earlier. Fortunately, meteorologists are in onjy slightly better positions technically to predict the path of a hurricane than seismographers are to predict eathquakes. and therefore we were scurrying a day ahead of a crisis to make proper decisions. As Thursday. Sept. 26, saw morning turn into early afternoon, the barometer began to drop and the anxiety level began to rise. News reports grew increasingly ominous and our decisions about school and school activities had to be made in anticipation of what could have been a catastrophe for this and other neighboring communities. WITH THE U.S. Coast Guard evacuating the Training Center in Cape May there was no alternative but to cancel all activities and close school the following day. So our youngsters were dismissed to help at homes where they were needed to move furniture, secure windows, and in many cases move with their families to higher ground. What followed on Thurs- ■ day evening and Friday morning was a tribute to community cooperation in an emergency situation. IT WAS ABOUT 9:30 p.m. Thursday that we were informed that the high school would be used " as a shelter for those local 1 residents who would be
evacuating their homes. The board of education was meeting in our library when the first of our guests reported to wait out the storm. What followed was an outstanding effort by four of our staff members who need to be recognized for a herulean effort to make 427 people comfortable while they were seeking refuge from the hurricane. Donna Kippel, our supervisor of buildings and grounds, headed our effort to cooperate with local and area civil defense authorities. She was assisted by Joan Listwan, our cafeteria supervisor, who made coffee and soup in an effort to comfort our displaced visitors. JOE BATTLE, our tansportation supervisor, drove buses to pick up evacues and moved wrestling mats onto our gym floor while Marcus Patterson our night watchman, was everywhere trying to help in a hundred different ways. In an emergency the best in human beings tends to surface and we are fortunate at Lower Cape May Regional to have these human beings on our staff. Good fortune came our way in the sudden northeastern turn of hurricane Gloria. The tidal flooding -was a disaster for all of those hapless families who now face the long exhausting chore of getting their lives and property in order. There is no consolation in the fact that we were 'lucky" - only that it gave us a chance to appreciate some very special people.

Health Watch by Dr Robert C Bcitm.in
Dear A.R.: J' Last week you wrote con- ; corned about waking up ? with fingers stiffened from ' arthritis. You indicated ; that you get some relief y from pain through taking ^ aspirin and ibuprofen. : Although there are more ^complex solutions y available, my first suggesc tion would be to. try the * least invasive approach. ^ Consider bathing your V hands in fairly warm water when you awaken. At first j rest them in the water, and n then work on loosening the y tightness by slowly flexing c-. at least 10 times. '% HYDROTHERAPY, the 1 use of water and added \ warmth, can help greatly ^ to unfreeze arthritisC- effected joints for many f people. Many of my patients agree to try swimmJ ing or walking in the pool £ and then make it a regular jr' part of their life styie I because it can work very \ nicely. V Some people like heated wax treatments and ' special massages s However, the warm bath is something almost g. everyone can accomplish * at home. Those with dif- * ficulty getting into the tub ^ may want to consider a ^ hand-held shower massage
to direct the heat more easily. PERHAPS the greatest favor readers can do for themselves as a result of this article is to improve the health of their bones and joints by maintaining an adequate calcium intake. While we don't know for sure the causes of arthritis, we do know a great deal of pain associated with the bones of the back. In particular this can be due to loss of calcium from childbirth and age. If you can tolerate dairy products this is your best route. A common mistake however, is to take skim milk. THERE IS not enough milkfat in skim milk to keep vitamin D in solution and without vitamin D your body can't use the calcium. Accordingly, be sure to drink the 2 percent milk to avoid empty calories and get the good calcium benefit. Fishbones and cheeses are also helpful, but those with high cholesterol must be more selective in seeking calcium-rich foods. Health Watch is a public education project of the Cape May County Unit of the American Cancer Society, of which Dr. Beitman is president-elect.
