IT'S AUTUMN alright. It's good walking weather; it's a good time of year to start a fire in the fireplace or wood stove; it's a good time of year to enjoy a cup of cider. Most people find October an exhilirating month. There's nothing that quite matches the red and scarlet, brown and bronze, yellow and gold one sees during a brisk walk outdoors. * * * The last of the summer birds are making their getaways. Here and there we see corn stalks and pumpkins and Indian corn to add a charm to nouses and store windows. It's still a ways to Halloween, but the youngsters like to see the autumn decorations in place long before Halloween (Thursday, October 31.) * ♦ ♦ NOW that the year has made its' turn into a new season, we find our thoughts forging ahead to the holidays just ahead. Yes, Thanksgiving and Christmas are quite a ways ahead, October is sure to bring to mind thoughts of making plans for the holidays. There'll be a lot of holiday bazaars ahead. We always enjoy the handmade items we see during these events. There's a lot of talented people in Cape May County. • • • The culinary talents of Cape May County chefs have always impressed us. Here are a few of the restaurants we especially enjoy:

VEGAS DINER. Still the best of the local diners, the Vegas Diner and Restaurant serves delicious home cooked meals from breakfast time on. A full line of breakfast specials for only $1.95 makes starting the day as easy as can be. Weekdays early bird specials are featured for only $6.50 from 3 to 5:30 p.m. All breads and pastries are baked right on the premises and they are so good you'll be tempted to bring some home. The Vegas is open seven days a week from 7:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. * * • RUSSO'S. Those in the know, proclaim Russo's Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge, at 4415 Park Blvd., Wildwood to be amongst the best Italian restaurants in the area. Even in an area that boasts numerous fine restaurants, Russo's reputation holds up year after year. The whitenatured veal and seafood dishes are house specialties and their excellence is unsurpassed. Take out platters are available. Call 522-7038 to place take out orders. Russo's is open 5 to 9:30 p.m. weekdays, Friday ana Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m. MERION INN.
