While it's probably true The Beach Boys will never come up with something to match their numerous 60s/early 70s classics, we should be thankful their new self-titled album (Caribou/CBS), is so consistent. The highpoints are, as always, their rich harmonies that can still bring warmth to a winter's day and their sophisticated, yet never pretentious, melodies. Setting this apart from their previous few albums is more care in selecting the material. FOR TOO long, The Beach Boys have taken a lazy route of recording three or four amazing tracks and then being content to pad the album with idrek. Not so here, as this lays well from beginning to end. Although the group photo indicates them to be well beyond the "Boys" stage, the music is, once again, ageless, full of vitality, and one of our great American treasures. AFTER A five-year absence from the music scene, English guitar hero Jeff Beck has returned with a vengeance. By now everyone who owns a radio or subscribes to MTV has heard his gripping remake of The Impressions' "People Get Ready". Not only has Beck coaxed former lead singer. Rod Stewart, into his strongest performance in years, but Beck's guitar lines are truly beautiful, showing good taste will always win over showing off with lightning fast breaks that don't fit the context of the song. NOTHING ON the new album. OFIash (Epic), tops "People Get Ready", but that hasn't kept Beck from coming up with a real winner. Trying a variety of styles, jazz, rock, and rhythm and blues, Beck's soloing should be essential not only to aspiring guitarists, but to all
who enjoy good musicianship. Since emerging as The Yardbirds' guitarist in 1964, Beck has remained one of rock's most creative instrumentalists, and for him to survive in a business where the newest kid on the block usually wins is the best testimony to this man's talent. IN THE LATE 70s, Nick Lowe could do no wrong. Emerging from the sadly neglected Brinsley Schwarz, he quickly found recognition as Elvis Costello's producer, solo star with the hit "Cruel To Be Kind", and member of the critically acclaimed band Rockpile. His simple, witty tunes were not only infectious, they also would make the listener smile. Unfortunately, Lowe's own records began to lose much of their charm. Most of them were technically good, but they lacked that prankster spark that attracted people to him in the first place. I'm pleased to report Rose of England (Columbia) is. not only a major comeback, it's his finest album. Lowe's new songs are bright, catchy, and fun, his voice has a devilish edge that makes him sound like a schoolkid who just got away with something, and his band is tight and swinging, sounding like a cross between a 60s British invasion Beat group and a Tex-Mex garage band. The Rose Of England is a very satisfying piece of work. Center Opens WILDWOOD - The city recreation center, on Rio Grande Avenue, opened for its fall activities yesterday Registration for classes and open house will be held 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday.
