i SPORTS by SUE McKinley Middle, Lower Suffer Heart-breaker Losses
Middle Township Gridders didn't take anyone's word for it when they heard ihat Oakcrest was the best. The Panthers exhibited their strength early in the second period when a 12play. 83-yard effort ended in the end zone in the hands of John Francis for a 7-0 Middle lead with 7:28 left in the first half. But before the Panthers could enjoy the lead, Oakcrest hit them back. After a 57-yard advance by the Falcons, Robert Daughtry took a 7-yard jog to force a 7-7 deadlock. DAUGHTRY MADE more than one donation. After Rich Gray ( 1 13 yards ) made a 20-yard run, quarterback Darren Drozdov delivered to Daughtry, who zipped down the right side-line for the 37-yard game winning touchdown. The persistent Panthers had 6:44 left to strike back, after forcing the Falcons to punt. A pass interference call gave Middle another scoring opportunity via a 13-yard pass to Mark Edwards for a first and goal.
WITH LESS than two yards to travel, the Panthers seemed to have a touchdown in their pockets. Oakcrest formed a brick wall that rejected Edwards three times, leaving him on the one-yard line. On the fourth down, quarterback Rob Hicks trailed the back and plowed into the line, only to be stopped short of a score, leaving the final score 13-7. After Edward's 103 yards on 21 carries and Hicks' 8 of 15 passes for 78 yards and a touchdown, the Panthers suffered a tough loss. IN OTHER local football, the Lower Cape May Capers fell short to Atlantic City, 10-17, in an interdivisional match. Viking quarterback Tim Mcllwain and wide receiver Mike Adams were a dynamic duo, connecting for five plays, including the winning touchdown. Penalties played a big role in the second period. A Caper penalty cost three points on a 38-yard field goal by Brown. LOWER CAPE May. on
fourth down, was penned in at its 24. Punter Wayne Walker fumbled the snap, sending the football only three yards. It was then the Vikings' ball on Lower's 27. A 17-yard completion, a 15-yard penalty and two incomplete passes left James Brown with a successful kick for a 3-0 Viking lead. Following that, the Remedying Exposure To Salt COURT HOUSE - Storms and high tides can result in injury to lawns and shrubs, and action should be taken. Lawns and shrubs flooded by salt water and salt spray should be irrigated well with plenty of fresh water. Failure to act promptly will result in salt injury to lawns, shrubs, and prized evergreens. This injury will not show up immediately, but will become very evident the next spring and summer. According to Larry Newbold, Cape May County Agricultural Agent, lawns that have been covered with salt water need special attention to prevent further injury. AN APPLICATION of agricultural gypsum should be applied to lawns at the rate of 80 pounds per each 1.000 square feet of lawn area. Fresh water should be used to wash the gypsum into the soil. Gypsum will help to improve the soil structure and then help to remove salt from the soil. It has very little effect on soil acidity ( pH ) so. this should not be a concern to gardeners Newbold also reminds county residents of a free leaflet "Storm Injured Trees", which can be obtained from the Cape May County Extension Service office (465-5115). This leaflet covers first aid for injured trees and also shows the proper procedure to save toppled trees.
Capers gathered some energy for 65 yards on 12 plays, featuring a two-yard touchdown by Luis Rodriguez. ON A FOURTH and seven from his own 38. Caper punter Walker hobbled another snap but recovered with a 22-yard run to the Viking 40. Eight plays later, the Capers owned a 6-3 lead as Rodriguez went in untouched. Bob Smith kicked the extra point to make it 7-3 at the half. Mcllwain and Reuben White took control in the final period with two first downs and Don Harris put the icing on the cake with a 10-yard run that put the ball on the Lower 27. After a 14-yarder by Harris and 6 and 3-yard sprints by White, the Vikings had a first and goal at the 3. The final play was a picture and another McIIwainAdams connection for a 10-7 Atlantic City win. J? } AVALON > Appliance Center 967-4621 2345 DUNE DR. AVALON
