i There's a lol of talk in 7 Ocean City about changing 1 the alcohol ordinance. (This y city has the dubious distinc ( tion of being one of the few -Ji cities in the world where it's easier to purchase hard drugs than a can of beer > After some problems with local private clubs, there wasstalk of closing a fewdown. But the powers-that-be in the city go to a couple of clubs, plus parties held in some hotels with the wine flowing like water. So this proposal is nowmoving to the back-burner, and it looks as if there will be little talk about private clubs at City Council for a while. There also is talk about changing the law so youcan't deliver or warehouse liquor here. Looks like com promise time, as since the change in the "Blue l.aws" some people have been bringing lip proposals for changing other laws affect ing alcohol. A LOT OK cities are being hit with big towing bills Here's how it works A per son abandons a car. The police call a towing firm and pull the car in. The owner never wanted to reclaim the car in many cases, so the car is stored at up to $10 a day for years ( U-ean City may owe Captain Hook Towing about $1.5 million In 1985. the Oily started auctioning off cars not reclaimed. And right now they arc trying to figure out if thev have to pay the hill So this is a problem that could affect the city t rcasury A nd t hose ca rs a re still sitting there, with the storage fee going up every day OCK.W CITY recently had aerial photos taken of the lieach. ami this may help to get more federal funds to repair damaged beaches < ifficials arc still surveying to determine just what the repairs to the beach and clean-up will cost About three feet of beach eroded and there were —J washouts of pari of the

boardwalk Plus, the city will have to move sand that washed onto the streets. Overall, damage was light for such a storm But the city may have to wait for that Federal money. They are still waiting for some $200.(KX) in funds to pay for the damage done by the 1984 storm in March. TIIK NEW JERSEY Department of Environmental Protection says the city will not qualify for shore protection funds, if it continues to allow building in erosion Lizard areas. The city stopped issuing building permits on certain ocean lots. Said Councilman Mark Videtto: "There's too much development on the beach and bay." The Retail Merchants Assn. is talking about doing away with the annual Christmas Parade. The RMA wants to promote the Christmas Village in the old firchouse at 9th and Asbury Said PR director Mark Soifer: "The parade is jjust a vehicle to bring Santa Claus to town But there are better ways of doing it ." The Halloween Parade is on The Exchange Club, which sponsors it. says it will start at 7:30 Thursday night. Oct. 31. at 6th and Asbury Avenue. This is usually a somewhat large and interesting parade, and the scary -dressed kids love it

... t The Ocean City Arts I Center will have its usual ar- j ray of classes and trips, even though it had to move < from the old center Eunice I Bell, center director, says \ there will be quilting i classes, basketry, watorcolor. sculpture and more I Plus trips to the Peddlar's Museum and the Mercer ( Museum. Call 399-7628 for i information. « ... | AS I SAII). Ocean City is i getting just like a major city. When there's a problem officials form a committee and issue press releases. But one new committee here apparently means business in more ways than one. and plans to change i how business is done here in i Ocean City. The Downtown Economic Development Committee is looking into ways to get more people to shop here. The group was appointed by Mayor Jack Brittner. And member John Barat - I ta. who owns more than one

around here, says of parking is a major problem "We could put gold all Asbury Avenue, but if there is no place to park, what good would it do''" he asks. He's going to push for a or three-level garage on Asbury Avenue. It's hard to change things in Ocean City. but Baratta says the old committees have not faced the avenue's marketing problems head-on. Scout Mart NORTH WILDWOOD - Boy Scout Troop 185 will sponsor an indoor flea market 8 a.m. -4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19. at the Moose Lodge Hall.
