Here's Dolly jtL By Dolly StAnpr. J
It could have been worse, but tenants at Victorian Towers in Cape May who were evacuated because of 'Gloria", the recent hurricane with the "mostest". called me to say ' thank you" for the good care they received: especially to our city officials. Civil Defense volunteers and particularly to St. Raymond's, where they were taken in buses. Kay Goldy, one tenant, emphasized they were treated royally and many parents with children who were already at St. Raymond's" from surrounding area, were so quiet and orderly. Another caller. John Brennan, also of the Towers, said special thanks should go to Father Robert Pasley of Star of the Sea in Cape May. also to Father Weber of St. Raymond's and to all the volunteers who performed with such speed and kind manner — further saying he'll never forget what was done for them all. But there was one tenant who never knew there was anything going on at all. She was sound asleep all night long, and woke up the next morning wondering where everyone was. That's Betty MacMillan - a sound sleeper, that's Elizabeth! Somehow Betty never thought too much about "Gloria" for she went to bed very early I WENT TO Star of the Sea Church in Cape May to offer my help — but when I got there Monsignor Patrick J. Madden, pastor, was already making coffee over and over again, mak ing toast, giving out fruit juices, with Father Boyle assisting. All 1 did then was set up the very large coffee urn. get more supplies out — and proceed to help those who had spent most of the night in the church, some sleeping on the bench pews.
f. I must say Monsignor s n calm manner helped to 0 make one forget what was •f going on outside — I even went into the kitchen and started to prepare for k lunch. But it's thanks we all y are giving at this point — it r could have been much, e much worse. y • • • e Ever talk to anyone on the 'phone and you just know she's smiling all the 1 time? That's Judy Parker s of the Golden Eagle Inn — - tries to help so much. s' • • • VICTORIAN WEEK is October 12-20 and there's so i much being planned here in ; Cape May; especially, at 1 the Cape May County Art r League, headquartered in i the Carriage House on the > Physick Estate, 1050 Washington St. Authors Howard Michaels and Marl cia Cudworth will be on hand selling and I autographing their book — • one much in demand for Victorian buffs, "Self- [ guided Architectural Tours ; of Cape May." Jarvis. former borough commissioner and resident of Cape May Point. He had many interests, but one closest to his heart was the tiny Saint Agnes' Church at the Point. He was general overseer, keeping it in tow as if it were his home. He'll be sadly missed not only by his family, but ever so many friends.
