Rec Staff Lauded By Official

AVALON - The Avalon Summer Recreation staff, which organizes activities and instruction involving everything from tennis and baseball to dance and sand sculpting, was recognized recently for its efforts by Borough Council President Pauline Petrica. "Once again, this year's summer recreation staff did an excellent job in each of the programs we offered, and on behalf of Borough Council and countless residents and visitors I want to thank and congratulate members of this year's outstanding staff for doing such a fine job," Petrica said. THE AVALON Recreation Program, directed year-round by Dave Haberle for the past four years, includes instruction and competition in tennis, baseball, basketball, soccer, hobie cat sailing and running and special ctivities such as art and antique shows, sand sculpting contests and a variety of other beach and artistic activities. "We've tried to create a well-rounded program that would involve at least one activity that everyone would be interested in," Haberle said, "we we're always ready to try something new " HABERLE. a graduate of Penn State Unviersity with a bachelor of science degree in recreation and parks, also praised this summer's staff members, describing them as "a dedicated bunch willing to give all it had to each program and each participant and always working to make sure everyone got the most out of the program." Members of the Avalon Summer Recreation program this year included : Doreen Drexel, director of the tennis program, who has been with the borough for the past 10 years. Drexel has a master's degree in health and physical educa-

tion and teaches at Gettysburg College; TERRY FERGUSON, a graduate of Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., who assisted with the tennis program; Mary Hogan, a student at Marquette University m Milwaukee, Wis., who was director of the aquatic program and was assisted by Lis Petrica, a student at Gettysburg College; Judy Ottiano, an art teacher for the Audubon School District, who was fine arts instructor. She was assisted by Teresa Foley, an Avalon resident who has worked with the Avalon Recreation Depart-

ment for the past five years; KELLY McGREAVY, a dance school student in Allentown, Pa., who was dance instructor. McGreavy was assisted by Anne Reynolds, a college student in Charleston, S.C. ; Fred Bock, soccer and basketball coordinator, who has been with the program for the past eight years. Bock was assisted in soccer by Peter Soens, who also worked with the baseball program ; And Midge Wilson, a student at Arizona State University, who assisted with the tennis and baseball programs.

Exercises In Evening CAPE MAY - Three different evening exercise classes are being offered at the city Elementary School as part of the Fall Recreation Schedule. Aqua Aerobics is an exercise class in the swimming pool that takes place 6-7 p.m. Swimming skill is not a prerequisite. There are two exercise classes in the gym. 5-6 p.m. and 6-7 p.m. Dancing experience is not a prerequisite for these exercise classes. AH of the P.M. Exercise classes are held Monday. Wednesday and Friday. Gym Program CAPE MAY — A comprehensive gymnastic program geared toward beginner and intermediate students will be offered as part of the city's fall recreation schedule. The clas?will be offered at the Franklin Street Civic Center 4-6 p.m. Thursday The first hour will be for ages S-7 with the second hour for ages 8-14.
