Whew! We are indeed fortunate as that fickle female "Gloria" nipped our coast and headed off for parts elsewhere It could have been worse, much worse, but nobody could deny that Five Mile Beach was prepared for the worst The orderly evacuation of motel guests early in the i afternoon coupled b\ the evacuation of residents a i few hours later augurs well for all community officials i Nobody was going to take I any chances with this | potentially devastating i storm I COUNTY OFFICIALS j

estimate that fully 25,000 residents heeded the evacuation warning and headed for higher ground or one of the selected shelters My wife, who rarely panics, makes up for the infrequency with impact when she does To date. I seem to have set the record for the longest distance evacuation Beverly Raymond, one of the competent front office staff at the El Coronado. thought she held the record by fleeing to Lancaster. . to avoid the storm. She really came in a respectable second, as my family and I i at my wife's uringi

1 found ourselves in Chambersburg. Pa.. 300 miles away, at 4 a m the day of the storm WE ARRIVED at my mother's house just in time to realize that the storm was not going to impact fully upon our coast. It was a brief "Hello", a quick breakfast and a long 300-mile return trip later that day My wife. Bonnie, who suggested the trip, also holds the records for saying "Better safe than sorry" more times during the trip than any known person to date! "Better safe than sorry" is one of those hackneyed

phrases that nobody likes simply because there is ab- — solutely no way to argue _ with it! it is only said bypeople who have "avoided a problem and are indeed safe The four words in the quote are sufficient to make up for any inconvenience and/or expense incurred for safety's sake. EVERY NEWS publication and news account of the storm said "Better Safe Than Sorry" a minimum of three times in discussing the storm I even found myself using the phrase when confronted by a sarcastic "chuckler" who was amuzed by my LONG distance evacuation route Oddly enough, even with accounts of the storm's fury carried on the news, a few individuals pressed their luck and opted for sorry rather than safe! It

was reported that police assistance was required in several instances across our island as certain residents pushed their luck Arguing with an elected official is an "offseason" past time on our island, but when an informed Mayor says "Go", you listen, not argue! EQUALLY STRANGE is the number of people I spoke with that said they would think twice about evacuating the next time. That's nuts! We did LUCK OUT this time, which certainly has no bearing whatsoever on the next time and obviously does not afford us any special dispensation in the future Barrier islands are physical structures designed to accept the full impact of a storm so that the mainland will be spared. Living and/or working on Five Mile Beach is precarious at best in the face of a pending storm. One can only hope that all concerned will heed future warnings and we ALL will continue to be safe rather than sorry! IN THE "newsy-notes" section of this week's ditty it should be noted that the popular Wildwood Crest Swim Team is conducting fall tryouts and orientation this next week. October 16, 17. and 18 have been established as the try-out days and the time daily is from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. If you have a potential swimmer of merit in the family report to the pool at Pittsburgh and New Jersey Avenue on any of the above dates. You can also call 522-0084 if you would like further information t Tonight. Oct. 9. at 7:30 p m the Wildwood Elementary Home and School Association invite all interested parents with children in the Wildwood School System to its meeting. It's an excellent active organization that thrives on parental involvement, so get involved. Refreshments are served at each meeting and the group offers babysitting services for those who must attend with "little ones" DON'T FORGET about the Champagne Concert at i Convention Hall Saturday, i Oct. 12 Featuring the New i Jersey Pops Orchestra, this Wildwoods tradition ; benefits the Burdette i Tomlin Hospital Building | Fund. Tickets may be ob- i tained at any MidLan- i tic/Union Bank branch on I the island. I While the night is always < memorable and the New I Jersey Pops Orchestra is

always sensational, it should be noted that this very popular event has been brought to our island annually through the efforts of two fine gentlemen. Roman Osadchuk and Charles Pessagno. Roman and Charlie deserve a tremendous amount of praise for their efforts, first for originating this gala evenings and second for having the energy to sustain the affair on an annual basis. It is truly a delightful evening, and along with the "Pops" these two men deserve a standing ovation for their performance.
