Candidates Must Run on Records

(From Page 70) margin a non-partisan form of government, and 2) Handpicked candidates. THE FIRST is obviously not accurate, since the word non-partisan was never mentioned on the ballot question. The voters simply wanted a change of government. As past president of the Lower Township Chamber of Commerce, Robert Obermeier, stated. "We have outgrown a three-person part-time committee and need professional management." The second theme that this candidate will run on is both incorrect and ridiculous. The Republican he accuses of being hand-picked was one of three candidates who came before the Republican Executive Committee and Four Republican clubs on Sept. 9, to seek endorsement. The vote as reported in the Lantern was 16-11-10. The candidate with 16 votes received organizational support. THE CLYDESDALE GROUP is accurate in stating Peggie Bieberbach was hand-picked, but isn't that the purpose of a non-partisan election, to do away with primary selection? May I point out that Clydesdale himself was "hand-picked" by Phyllis Genovese, his mentor! This divides attitude displayed by this man's backers is based on self interest. It is a get-even frame of reference. Yes, get even with the local and county Republican organization. The organization what Clydesdale and Genovese were part of for so many years an organization that put Clydesdale into office only to have him turn his back, an organization where Genovese and others could not have their way. so they quit. This hurt the taxpayers tremedously. It allowed the flim flamery of Mayor Robert Fothergill and Solicitor Bruce Gorman to continue. Bieberbach will run little of a campaign. Her last week effort will be one of rhetoric. She will pat herself on the back and say. "Look at me. I was the first woman mayor in Lower. " CLYDESDALE AND BIEBERBACH are supported by a divided Democratic Party. They share common ground in that they will not deal with issues. They will not deal with their combined 13 years in office — what they did and what they did not do. And, let me remind you they did very little while they were in office. All three candidates have held political office. They must run on their records. The new form of government in Lower is not an issue in this election. Charter Commission member Louis Dwyer summed up the Township Committee form of government when he said, "... The government was not being run in an organized, businesslike manner ... the budget process was inept and there was absolutely no long-range planning for the Township August/83 Lantern >." Bieberbach and Clydesdale served a total of 13 long years on that form of government. They, as colleagues, worked together as a team. Was the form of government at fault, or where the Democratic supported majority on Township Committee the reason for economic failure'' THE COUNCIL/MANAGER form of government has two major faults. 1) Ward councilmen do not have to

answer to the township at large and 2) Non-partisan. Ward councilmen can raise your taxes township wide. They can purpose ordinaiices that will effect the entire township. Yet, they only have to answer to one third of the voters at election time. Not until a municipality reaches a population of 30,000 should council candidates be elected from individual wards solely. Lower Township has about 20,000 residents Partisan politics has made America great. It has worked throughout the world when other systems have failed. There is nothing wrong with partisan politics, only with those not capable of working within its guidelines. On Nov. 5. select your councilman-at-large based on his or her's record in office. Check into how they voted on tax increases and bonding, etc. Look into how they dealt with environmental issues, development, solid-waste removal, road repair. Don't let certain candidates turn this election into a beauty contest! MICHAEL J. STUBBS North Cape May

The Lower What? To The Editor: Thank you for my Lazarus-ian return with publication last week of column. "House-Bond? COOPER North Wildwood No Partisan Politics? To The Editor: I read with amusement and sadness the letter from Grace Bielkowski in the Sept. 25 edition of your newspaper. She complains atxxit "party hoppers" and waves a banner of a partisan political party. What Mrs. Bielkowski and the supporters of Mrs Bieberbach do not seem to understand is that partisan politics is dead in Lower Township. When the people passed the Charter Change, they were sending a message to the two political parties. The people of Lower Township are no longer interested in choosing between the designess of a small group of Republicans and the designee of a small gorup of Democrats. The people of Lower Township want the chance to vote for the best available candidate, regardless of his or her political leanings. Mrs. Bielkowski and the supporters of Mrs. Bieberbach are living in the past. Partisan politics is dead in Lower Township. That is the way it should be. and that is the way we have to keep it.
