It is extremely common for patients to seek help with trouble sleeping. This is particularly the case with older men and women who have gone through menopause. Since there are some simple skills and diagnostic considerations which may help people, we will spend a few weeks exploring this problem. A recent survey in America showed that 26 percent of women and 13 percent of men over the age of 30 complain of insomnia. While in Britain 8 percent were found to sleep less than five hours nightly. 35 percent complained of awakening frequently, and 25 percent were tired in the morning. ALTHOUGH IT will seem obvious to many, avoiding beverages before going to sleep is one of the simplest means of avoiding early awakening. Of course, this doesn't apply to pregnant women and nursing mothers! Urination frequency does tend to increase with age. so reducing the reason for urination may help you sleep through the night. Equally obvious would be attempting to urinate, however little comes out. right before you go to sleep. This will reduce bladder pressure for a while longer. A GREAT misnomer is that of the 'night cap". Yes. alcohol may help you fall asleep faster. However, there is a minor withdrawal reaction three or four hours afterwards that actually disturbs sleep. It is also necessary to evaluate what is meant by insomnia. Studies show that many who believe they have insomnia actually do fall asleep within 30 to 40 minutes after going to bed. Depending on your age. health and lifestyle, you might decide you can live with such a delayed sleep onset.
