5 Department of Environmental Protection. Coastal Resource Division. _ says it won't allow builders J in Ocean City to construct duplexes close to the beach. > If the building continues the DEP would withhold millions of dollars in shore . protection funds. J The city is now denying building permits for some projects located on the 3 beachfront between 19th and 25th Streets on the eastward side of Wesley Avenue. The city council believes that there will be more restrictions on development of beachfront properties. WILLIAM MEIS. who is becoming the city's most controversial councilperson says he fears Ocean City could become another Wildwood by 1986 if we don't do something about untreated sewage being dumped in the ocean. He blames the so called "green tide" on increased sewage created by the summer visitors. He also says that with the new projects (the Nantucket, Blue Water and Santa Barbara ) the system will have even more sewage to dispose of He wants the MUA to develop a solution to the problem of the overworked treatment plant. CITY OFFICIALS can't figure out how to get better taxi service here. They want to boost the license fee and do more testing of the meters. Also, some council members want taxis licensed in the city to be here to pick up passangers. Mayor Jack Bitner believes that if the city is too restrictive taxi firms won't operate here at all LOTS OF changes on Asbury Avenue. A few stores have locked up and won't reopen A few new ones have moved in. We notice a lot of discount shops opening here, so maybe the discount shopp ing trend is cutting into the boutiques business Of the three new restaurants, two closed. But. the one remaining will stay open year-around. Finally, on the economic side, we hear a paper in Ocean City is up for sale. Ocean City has more weekly papers than most cities its size. Plus, a new magazine is being published here. GLORIA'S GONE and there was a lot of damage, but nothing compared to what was expected. Ocean City now has a couple of dozen insurance adjusters staying here, working on claims. They come from all over the country when there's a storm. (They work on a percentage. > The Rev.
