Avalon Hall Given New Backboards
AVALON -Thanks to the generosity of residents and businesses here and the organizing efforts of one man in particular. Community Hall now has two additions to its inventory. Two recently installed fiberglass backboards have replaced the fan-shaped metal boards that basketball players have rebounded and shot from for more than 15 years. •'I've been playing basketball here for years and decided to do something to let Community Hall and the basketball program here know I cared," said Fred Sylvester, the man who spearheaded the fund raising drive. "FIBERGLASS boards give the program a professional touch and also add to the appearance of Community Hall," he said. Sylvester said he went to friends and businesses throughout Avalon and asked them to donate to the $1 .500 purchase of the backboards. "I received overwhelming support and encouragement and sincerely appreciate and thank all the people who helped," he said. Dave Haberle, Avalon recreation director, said the project began in April and the backboards were installed by the beginning of the summer.
"Fred worked hard to get the project moving and the support he's received he been just super. I think everyone who's ever played basketball here will appreciate the generosity of the donors," Haberle said. THE AVALON Recreation Department sponsors three nights weekly of adult basketball, which begins in January.
