COURT HOUSE - Burdette Tomlin was a man of action. When he saw an opportunity or
need, he took steps forward a , to meet it. t ; He was born in Cape May 'r County and began in I business using a horse and J 1 wagon to buy produce to 1 ~ sell to hotels in Ocean City, c _ After a short time, he located in Millville and 1 bought a half interest in a t cigar store, eventually buy- 1" - ing the other half as well. I \ A few years later he swit- c ched to retail clothing, pur- c chasing the Tom Morgan & Son's Clothing Store in Millville. which he operated for 20 years. I\ 1931. Tomlin bought some land hoping to discover oil Instead, he discovered the value of sand and gravel. Thus began the prospering business of the New Jersey Silica Sand Co. At this time. Burdette Tomlin took up permanent residency in Ocean City In 1941. the Cape May Courl House Chamber of Commerce met and discussed the need for a hospital in Cape May County. Tomlin heard about the meeting and escrowed $25,000 in the First National Bank of Cape May Court House on May 5. with the understanding that this amount was to be matched by area citizens or return ed to him by Nov 1 The
amount was only matched but exceeded. WORLD WAR II delayed the building project. after the war in 1946. the community proceeded with the plans Burdette Tomlin did not live to see the opening of the hospital which bears name. He died in 1942. a large portion of estate to help ensure completion of the project so close to his heart.
What Makes Tourists Go COURT HOUSE - "Jus! How Successful Was the Summer of 1985''" is the program theme of the NewJersey Travel and Resort Association's Oct. 23 meeting. Guest speaker Anthony Villane. of the New Jersey Division of Travel and Tourism, will describe the state's survey method which reported a 20 percent increase in tourism this summer The program will address a variety of questions on the number of tourists, their origin, length of stay, and changes in vacation patterns The meeting is scheduled for noon at the Old Time Tavern, Main Street, Toms River. In Running SOUTH SEAVILLE - Local resident Irene Smith is one of the 200 finalists in the grand prize drawing for a million dollars in the recently completed "Baseball 85" instant New Jersey Lottery, to be held next Wednesday at the Claridge Casino and Hotel, and Atlantic City. The finalists will also compete for $225,000 in smaller prizes.
