Charges Dropped For Resignations

COURT HOUSE - Charges of marijuana

possession against four county Parks Department employees were dismissed last week in exchange for their resignations. They were among seven persons nabbed by the Pro\secutor's office in August for allegedly possessing marijuana on the job. Two immediately resigned in exchange for charges being dropped and were never identified. William Howard MacBride, 36. of Goshen, was suspended and charged with marijuana possession and theft of items valued at more than $200. His case is pending. The four whose plea bargaining was accepted by Middle Township Municipal Court Judge Robert L. Taylor Oct. 9 included: Kenneth Langford of Burleigh, resigned permanently. James Turner of Goshen, J resigned and agreed not to seek reemployment for three years. A second charge against Gurnsey of disorderly person/theft under $200 also was dismissed. The plea bargaining was done by attorneys representing the county. Assistant County Prosecutor Susan Schalles, and defense attorney Frederick W. Schmidt Jr. The seven persons represented almost a third of the department's 24member work force. Most, if not all. have already been replaced. At the time of the arrests, county Detectives Capt. Robert W Elwell said some of the employes had been operating county vehicles and equipment while using marijuana. The Prosecutor's investigation was requested six or eight weeks prior to the arrests by Parks Executive Director Leon F*ulginiti and Freeholder Ralph W. Evans, who heads parity , according to Elwell. Jail Dealers, MIND Says COURT HOUSE - Local members of MIND (Mandatory Incarceration of Narcotics Dealers) met with Assemblyman Guy F. Muziani yesterday afternoon in the County Library to push for a state law requiring judges to jail drug dealers. Muziani has agreed to sponsor a bill for minimum and maximum sentences, according to Lower Township Detective Robert Martin who founded MIND with Lower Detective Jack Trombetta "Right now, he can get zero to max," Martin said of jail terms for a drug dealer. "We want a minimum sentence. " "Right now, it's up to us to prove he's a dealer." Martin added. MIND wants legislation that would require suspected drug dealers "to prove they're | not" guilty as charged.
