Joyride III dKr By Libby Demp Forrest \J 1 'There's something about sharpening pencils that always gets me." I said to No. 2 as I ground awav No. 2 stared at me in disbelief "Sharpening pencils''" No. 2 asked "It's part of a great tradition." I said as I turned the handle. "What great tradition?" No. 2 asked. "Well." I said, "think of all the schoolboys and schoolgirls for generations who've sharpened their pencils in classrooms the length and breadth of this land. Kids who stood in classrooms getting nice sharp points on their pencils so they could do math and spelling." "I'VE KNOWN KIDS who've asked to sharpen their pencils so they could get out uf doing math and spelling for a while," No. 2 said. "There's that too." I said. "When I was growing up. the pencil sharpener wasjkept under the cellar steps and we had to go down to the jcellar when we sharpened pencils I liked to go down the cellar and poke around while I was down there. 1 used to keep my pencils in a pencil case and carry them back and forth to school." No. 2 started at me again. "Mom," he said, "aren't you getting carried away 9 Hey, look what you're doing to the pencils." I looked. "NOT MUCH LEFT to this pencil, is there?" I said. "Something about sharpening pencils that gets to me." "You're a menace at the pencil sharpener," said No. 2 "Well, anyway," I went on, "this business of sharpening pencils is a kind of ritual that inspires one to start a job well organized; with everything laid out in good order Kind of like an astronaut who'? getting ready to go into space " No. 2 continued to stare at me. "I REMEMBER WHEN I was a kid. every so often I would go all around the house and collect every pencil I could find, and carry them down into the cellar and give them all a good sharpening," I said. "I guess kids didn't have too much fun in those days," said No. 2 unimpressed "I would take them all upstairs again and put a few by the telephone and a few here and a few there Nowadays I have trouble even finding a stub to use when I lake a message around here," I said. "Is that the point of all this?" said No. 2. "Get it. Mom"' Ha. ha."
