Fisherman 's Memorial Draws Big Response

CAPE MAY - The crowd at the recent dinner to honor and support the Cape May County Fisherman's Memorial Project held a special meaning for Helene Halstead. As more than 400 people paid tribute to fishermen lost at sea through their purchase of $50-a-piate din-

; ner tickets. Halstead took a moment to reflect on the ; disaster that changed her life and the lives of other t Cape May County residents. "When the Misty Blue sank on April 12. 1983, 1 lost i my dad. Kris Isaksen; my step-brother, Ed Coleman: my fiance, Jim Partin, and a friend. Warren Knight." she said. "THE FISHING industry is the backbone of Cape May County and the memorial is something that should have been done a long, long time ago." Halstead. in a quiet and moving scene, then read a poem written by members of her family at the time of the sinking of the Misty Blue. Committee member Beech Fox. a moving force behind the project, said he was overjoyed at the response to the dinner. About 80 additional reservations were made the day of the dinner. "There is tremendous support for fishermen in the county." Fox said. COMMITTEE member Rick Beare read off a list of $2,000 donations from First National Bank of Toms River. First Jersey Bank. National Associates. Wayne Halbruner and

large donations from ie Johnson and Towers. Tom x McVey and others, x "With this kind of supy . port we'll be able to raise the $160,000 needed for the e memorial and more it monies for the proposed y Cape May Nautical Arts and Sciences Center and d chapel." Beare said. "The museum will give school children more y opportunities to learn e about the fishing industry, e propulsion systems, pollug tion and other related e things." he said. The memorial should be comd pleted by Memorial Day a 1986. with the museum pros ject in five or 10 years, f depending on funding. >> BEARE SAID the museum should include a r special section in tribute to ? the U.S. Coast Guard. The i only recruit training center ? in the country is located in Cape May County. "Many more fishermen would be lost at sea without the Coast Guard," Beare i said. The memorial and i museum will be located on the harbor near the base on land given to the fishermen by the city of Cape May. "Cape May officials and people have been supporting us all through the project and we're very grateful to them."
