Two Bills Bolster Superfund

WASHINGTON. D.C. - Two House Committees have approved legislation supported by Congressman Bill Hughes < D-NJ > which is aimed at extending and strengthening the federal Superfund program. Hughes said enactment of the legislation is critical because the current Superfund law expires this year. "Some 850 dumpsites around the country are on the Superfund list, including 87 sites in New Jersey." Hughes said. "With such a widespread toxic threat facing the nation, it is imperative that^he Superfund program be reauthorized this year. "TOXIC WASTE, sites, and the dangers they present. are not going to disap-

pear by themselves." he continued. "We need a strong federal Superfund law. and a commitment from the Administration to fully implement it." Under the legislation. Hughes said, the Superfund program will be extended for five years, and its resources will increase to more than $10 billion, paid for primarily by those who caused the pollution. In addition, the legislation strengthens the enforcement mechanisms in the program setting strict timetables for clean-up activities. allowing citizens the right to bring suit to enforce the law. and establishing a strong community right-to-know program Sellers Week NORTH CAPE MAY - G.
