Great Strain (Page 54 Please) CHILDREN HAVE NOT changed. They do not want more things from their mothers. They still crave her time and understanding. The steady increase in teenage alcoholism, drug addiction, promiscuity, runaways, and suicide is a graphic illustration of children's vital need for their mothers, rather than her paycheck. Unfortunately, money can not purchase character qualities. They are cultivated and refined through patient discipline and a continuous supply of unselfish love, two commodities found in short supply when Mom's not supervising the children. (Proverbs 22:6 "Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old. he will not depart from it ") Have the working mothers themselves attained the promised euphoria that juggling the husband, the babies, and a career is suppose to bring? Studies are now showing that, instead of euphoria, the working mother is experiencing "burn out," guilt, and a feeling of inadequacy as she can not effectively meet all of the demands placed on her WOMEN HAVE SACRIFICED both their families and themselves in their quest for material gain. (Matthew 6:19 "Lay not up for yourselves treasure upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt and where thieves break through and steal" ) As mothers working outside the home becomes the norm, the quality of life in the United States can only decline. The strain on the family is far too great. Ladies, instead of arguing we should be joining together, but not to make it easier for us to work outside of the home, but to fight to put our constructive efforts back into the home and to return to the original family unit which has been time tested and God designed as the most successful route to happiness. (Psalm 127:1 "Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.") MARIE PRATT Cold Spring

We All Do (Page 54 Please) I REITERATE, if only one child is helped in 10, than the program is worth it. The point which puzzles me the most is why the single parent or the family where both parents have to work are maligned. Are we to be forever held in contempt by our non-working counterparts because we have to work? Are we forgiven because we have to work? Are we not also leaving our children in someone else's care? How can we make the distinction? Because one mother works and does not have to she will raise a John Hinckley < who I might mention was mentally deranged) and another mother who works because she has to will be blessed with a perfect child? If that were the case, what can we say about Adolf Hitler; was his mother a non-working mother? Anyone who has had more than one child knows each one is different. The mind is so complex it is hard to say what each child will do because the parent did or did not give. THE PROGRAM in question will cost the taxpayer so little; the parent is required to pay for this service. Where is the voice for the taxpayer at each Township meeting, at each election? Where was the concern last November when the Police Department switched to the Police and Fire Pension? Now. don't get me wrong, I think they are entitled to that too. but the price tag on that will far exceed the cost of the afterschool child care program. The taxpayer will pay for that long after the few unneedy children are out of school. We will all be paying for that, the children included if they stay here, far into the next generation. Now tell me, is it fair to help one select group, and not another? Where would we be if everyone went around saying, because I don't need it, you can't have it? Not a verv Christian attitude is it? DEBRA E. BUCK Erma Sacrifices (Page 54 Please) care, who would rather — and could rather — be at home, is the one making the biggest sacrifice for his parents choices). I also questioned the low cost of the multi-service AfterSchool Daycare Program at Maud Abrams Elementary School. But Oliver West, principal of Maud Abrams and administrator-in-charge of the program, assures me that the program is not tax-supported. This is good news to me. as I'm sure it must be to all persons who don't desire to pay the baby-sitting fees for adults who — financially speaking — don't need it. And I will continue to voice my opposition to tax-funded day care for the "unneedy" whenever I feel it necessary to do so. And I will continue to oppose a society which deliberately, by any means, tries to convince women to relinquish their natural roles as primary nurturers of their children I HAVE BEEN CALLED "paranoid, negative, and narrow-minded," but one needs only to stretch her mind as far as Sweden, the USSR. Red China to know that whoever controls the children controls the nation — hence, the world. In closing, let me stress that we are all individuals. What works for me may not work for someone else; and 1 too applaud and appreciate the freedom in this country that allows for choices. But a lot is at stake here, and I would admonish everyone everywhere as choices are made to think. ..and think again. MRS. CHERRI OLSEN Villas I

To The Editor: Recently. President Reagan ordered American planes to force down a plane in Italy carrying terrorists who had seized an unarmed Italian passenger liner carrying people on vacations. One man who was crippled due to a stroke was shot and thrown overboard I believe President Reagan was correct in the action he took. These so-called terrorists must be stopped Another matter I wish to call attention to is the waysome in the news media seem to apologize for America Their jobs are to report the news honestly and fairly. The news media is not being paid to make foreign or domestic policy. Many times reporters are so anxious to get a story that they do not check out all the facts. When they realize they were wrong, a retraction is issued, usually buried in the inside pages. NOT TOO LONG AGO. Channel 10 in Philadelphia was sued by Mayor Bill Green. The station stated that Mayor Green was guilty of wrong doing and was wanted byfederal authorities. He was not guilty of anything. Channel 10 publicly apologized to Mayor Green. It's my understanding that Mayor Green sued for several million dollars. The matter was resolved out of court with the understanding the amount would not be disclosed. The news media is very lax in training reporters to honestly report stories. Their purpose is to inform and educate the people. Why shouldn't the news media be made to "clean up their act"? MARJORIE GALAMORE Sea Isle City Park Outstanding To The Editor : The employes of Middle Township held their annual picnic on Oct. 6 at the Cape May County Park. joy ride III By Libby Demp Forrest \J JJ" J Kids don't come cheap. | A while ago 1 read an article that listed the costs of raising a kid, starting with how much it costs to have a babv today I'm glad I got in under the wire From what I read, there are monitoring devices that evaluate a baby long before it is born ^ When No. 2 was in utero. my own built-in sounding device told me this kid was going to cost It was a perfectly wonderful pregnancy without any pro blems. but I could tell No. 2 wouldn't tie wearing No I s hand-me-downs EVERY BOOK on childbirth that I read at that time said each subsequent child in a family would tie born larger than the earlier one Of course. No. 2 broke tradition No. 1 's bunting hung all around him. and I had to go out and gel a smaller size. I had always read that nursing was the preferred way of feeding a child, and I rejoiced there would be no getting up in the middle of the night to warm bottles for No. 2. But the pediatrician thought No. 2 would do better on a special soybean formula, so right there and then. No. 2 was costing. NO. I II AD STARTED walking around a year of age. but No. 2 started stepping out at seven months, therebycosting money fof restraints No. 2 was a jumper He wore out one baby carriage after another, then one stroller after another because he jumped up and down in them as if they were tumbling mats. The beautiful hand carved wooden blocks made in Kentucky that No. 1 had played with were no good for No. 2. No. 1 had liked to build bridges and towers with the blocks, but No. 2 liked to throw them The wooden blocks were put up in the attic, and No 2 got a set of brightly colored plastic blocks.' More money. NO. I HAI) LiKEI) fairy tales and Mother Goose. No. 2 did not He liked how-to books. How to take apart playpens. How to take apart furniture How to lake apart tricycles.
