"It must be nice to read all day!" is a remark frequently heard by librarians. I'm all incredulous or a little stunned by the remark. Just what does a librarian do all day? Well. I kept track of my activities last week and the following is a composite of a day's activity. 8:30 a.m. Checked desk for messages and noted the day's appointments: counted the previous day's circulation 'librarian talk for the number of books, videotapes, records etc. borrowed i . 9:15 Selected a variety of dictionaries for a class visit. 9::h) GAVE a tour of the building and a discussion of all the variety of dictionaries and finished off • with showing the kids a game that uses of all things a dictionary! 10:30 Had an appointment with one of the school librarians planning class visits and locating special materials for a Halloween ~~7| program for the school *T 11 Reference question: a patron wanted the NADA book to find out what his us- | ed car was worth on a I trade-in. Phone reference: the address of a prepared food company for a letter of complaint An elderly patron asked me to select I three talking books of the romance and suspense | ' genre for her because she I couldn't read the titles on the boxes A mother came in to do her son's homework needing to iden I lify eight leaves i l : :m M \ I) E sure clerical staff working at I hi- desk had arrived at a suitable lunch schedule I Renewed tour books over the phone for a patron Showed someone how to use the microfilm machine so he could find a newspaper article on an automobile accident for the insurance company 12 Restocked the paper in the photocopier, showed a | patron how to use the VCR. Phone reference Where can I go to school to learn blacksmithing? [ 12:30 Lunch— yes. this is my chance to read'
i 1 :30 WROTE a 20-minute talk on women's historical ' fiction to be given to a local civic group. 3 Wrote a press release on the upcoming film | series. 3:30 Helped a patron 1 order for a children's party; reference question: patron needed the names and addresses of the senators and representatives from our district and how to address the beginning of the letter. Reference question. A high school student needed a picture of a newspaper from the 1700s. 4 SPENT time on the telephone with the librarian from Atlantic City Public library discussing cooperative summer reading clubs over a fivecounty area; reviewed VOYA. a book selection magazine that reviews books fcr young adults. 4:30 Helped a patron find the New Jersey Landlord and Tenant laws; helped a patron searching his genealogy to our sources; fixed a. jam in the photocopier; made a library card for a patron As you can see. a librarian's job is very varied, but leaves little time for reading.
