Crop Insurance Expanded
TRENTON - For the first time, fanners in Cape May County are eligible for expanded federal crop insurance coverage to help recover losses from certain fruit and vegetable crop disasters. That announcement was made by state Agriculture Secretary Arthur R. Brown Jr. in disclosing that the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Federal Crop Insurance Corporation
(FCIC), has expanded the crops it will cover under its program beginning with 1986 crops. UNDER THE FCIC program, farmers can purchase insurance coverage for specific crops to cover 50, 65, or 75 percent protection from a variety of environmental losses such as those resulting from hail, freezing, hurricanes, and drought. The coverage will be available to farmers from commercial insurance companies under contract to the FCIC. EXPANDED coverage in Cape May will include both
sweet corn and tomatoes for processing. Previously covered were: barley, wheat, corn, grain sorghum, and soybeans. For further information, farmers in Cape May and Atlantic counties can contact the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service office at 1200 West Harding Highway.
