Warm Weather Cuts SJI Earnings 4
FOLSOM — South Jersey Industries. Inc. (SJI), a diversified natural gas distribution and natural resources development holding company, reported consolidated earnings of approximately $6.6 million for the nine months ended Sept. 30. according to William F. Ryan, president and chief executive officer. The consolidated net income for the nine-month period represented earnings per share of $1.81 based on 3,649.995 average shares outstanding. Consolidated earnings for the same period in 1984 totaled approximately $7.3 million or $2.38 per share based on 3,070.226 average shares outstanding. THE INCREASE in average shares outstanding is mainly the result of the issuance of common stock through a public offering in 1984 and the company's dividend | reinvestment and stock purchase plan. Consolidated revenues for SJI for the nine months ended September 30, amounted to approximately $215.9 million. For the comparable period last year. consolidated revenues totaled approximately $239.3 million. Total consolidated revenues for the 12 months ended September 30. were
approximately $296.7 million. compared to approximately $329 million for the similar period ended Sept. 30. 1984. IN HIS analysis. Ryan attributed SJI's performance to temperatures that were 12 percent warmer than normal and 13.5 percent warmer than last year. This situation earlier in the year affected sales of natural gas by South Jersey Gas Co.. the natural gas utility subsidiary of SJI, and home heating oil by South Jersey Fuel. Inc., a fuel oil distribution affiliate of SJI. Ryan noted that the impact of the warmer than normal temperatures was partially offset by the net addition of more than 6,000 new customers for South Jersey Gas. SOUTH JERSEY Gas contributed earnings of approximately $5.4 million for the nine months ended Sept. 30. compared to earnings of approximately $6.2 million for the comparable period last year. Energy & Minerals. Inc. (EMI), the natural resources development subsidiary of SJI. reported consolidated earnings of approximately $1.2 million for the nine-month period, compared to nine-month^ earnings of approximately $1.4 million in 1984.
