How Divorce Affects SS

If you are divorced, financial matters can lie a major concern. This is especially true if you have dependent children or you are older and have counted on getting benefits on your

former spouse's Social Security record. As a divorced person, you should be aware of what protection Social Security can provide. In this way. you will know what to expect should you or your former spouse have a loss of income due to death, disability. or retirement. UNMARRIED children can get monthly benefits when either parent insured under Social Security dies or receives disability or retirement checks. Their payments continue to age IB 1 19 if in high school > or to any age if disabled before 22. If you are caring for a child under 16 or disabled who is getting benefits on your deceased former spouse's record, you may be eligible for checks also if your earnings are limited If you are under 65-and earn $5,400 or less in 19$5; for example, you are eligible for all benefits.
