Black Belt Earned By Cape Boy at 12

RIO GRANDE - There is probably, something less than a corporal's guard of black belt holders in karate in Cape May County. There are still fewer 12-year-olds who can boast of that distinction. One. and most likely the only one. is Eddie Moore, son of Edward and Maryann Moore of School Lane. EDDIF EARNED his black belt status after being driven weekly for two years for American Independent Karate classes in Dennisville under Herbie and Paul Simmerman. Instruction went on before and after regular class, so that sessions often ran from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The youngster started classes at 10 and proceeded through orange, purple, and brown belts. He was joined by his brothers. Brian, then 7. and Stephen. 6. The parents purchased sparring equipment and a punching bag to help in their training. THE THREE BOYS "pushed each other to attain more and do it quickly." says Mrs. Moore, adding. "Personally. I did not want Eddie or his brothers

taking karate, but their father felt it would be good for them. It was." Her eldest, she says, has gained enough confidence to perform difficult techniques in front of hundreds of people Eddie now attends classes twice a week, his brothers one. Both are pur pie belts and are working for the brown Helping them is part of Eddie's black belt training. Comments the young karate expert: "The main reason I joined is because I always wanted to break boards 1 thought it looked neat. But I never thought I would stay in it long enough to become a black belt." Cage Signups AVALON — Signups for the Avalon Boys and Girls Gems Basketball team are slated by the recreation departments. Children in 5th - 8th grade are eligible. Registration will be held after school. Monday-Wednesday-Friday Nov 4. 6. and 8. For further information call 967-3066.
