Panthers Edge Capers, 7-6, Before 3,000 Fans
o * The Middle Township football team finally arrived after a scoreless first half against Lower Cape May Friday night before 3.000 fans For the first time this season, the 4-0 Panthers devoted their halftime minutes to planning a win rather than a comeback and rf-oved it to be much more beneficial to second half psyche The Panthers took the field in the third period and lit up the scoreboard with 6:46 remaining in the quarter. Quarterback Hob Hicks delivered an 11-yarder by airmail to John Francis in the endzone for a 6-0 edge over the Capers Hicks put the icing on the cake with an extra point boot for the seventh Panther point The Capers struck back with a 2<l-play. 80-yard consumption and a two-yard scoring run %y Eric Simonsen The Capers went for the two-point conversion and a win. but the Panther intensity flattened Caper Quarterback Kevin Lare in the backfield.
WITH THE SCORE at 7-6, Middle gave the next move to the Capers via a Mark Edwards fumble. By the fourth down. Lower had a foot to go on the six. but they were unable to shake Panther Eddie Bryan who made the tackle from behind and put the win in the books. OCEAN CITY started off on the right foot Saturday against Millville in a Division HI battle for the title It was the right foot of Chris Gunnel that broke the ice with a 36-yard field goal for a 3-0 first quarter lead. After a Millville fumble, linebaker John Beloin secured the football on the Thunderbolt's 18. It was then seven Raider plays and a three-yard dash by Bob Krokenberger topped with a Gunnel point after touchdown that made it 10-0. O.C After first half action, the Raiders' statistics outweighed Millville 118 yards to 35. Millville did construct a nine-play. 59-yard journey that finished with a 17-yard
run by Harold Camper for their only touchdown The Raiders weren't through yet. however. They wanted a crusher, so they left it up to Leon Brown who collected 52 yards for a touchdown after a fumble and 70 yards for his fourth quarter trip into the endzone and a comfortable win for Ocean Citv. LOCAL SOCCER teams collected four wins last week beginning with a Wildwood Catholic Division III lead for the title. Andy Weiss booted the second overtime winner on a Pat MacFarlane assist to give Catholic a 3-2 win over Lower Cape May. Weiss and MacFarlane each marked the scoreboard in regulation time. Caper scorers were Bruce Calverley and Keith Jackson but were not enough for a win. and Catholic's record was boosted to 8-1-1.
Lower Cape May recorded one win thanks to Kevin Jackson who booted two goals in a Division II win over St. Augustine. Jackson was assisted by Chris Eksprom who delivered the pass. OCEAN CITY had a good week on the "foot" ball field as they picked up two wins. The Raiders used overtime minutes to connect for two nets and a win over St. Augustine. 4-3.
Sean Tarves and Brendon Gallagher netted the game winners. The Raiders' other victory was a 2-1 defeat over Cumberland. Frank Edward lit the scoreboard in the first period and Brendon Gallagher hit for his second in two games. Two minutes later, the Colts retaliated, but fell short to a 2-1 Raider win. Ocean City goalie Jamie McElgin recorded the win with 10 saves for the day. THE BIG RACQL'ET on the tennis courts last week belonged to Middle Township's Helen Ann Lloyd whose 154) record led the Panthers to their first Cape Atlantic League girl's tennis title with a defeat over Wildwood Catholic. Tracy Yarborough was also responsible with a 6-4 6-2 win over her Crusader opponent. The Panthers' doubles squad consisted of Gail Logue and Tracy Greenwaldt serving a 6-1 6-4 victory. Kara McVey and Missy Whittington entertained with their usual suspense going a full threeset match. After a smashing 6-1 first set edge, the duo fell 1-6 in the second and relied on their second wind reputation to pull them through with a 6-3 final for a win. The 4-1 victory gave Middle their security and a 15-0 league record. While they were on the war path early in the week, the Panthers preyed on Buena and Sacred Heart. Two 5-0 wins were Middle's appetizers before consuming Catholic on Friday.
WILDWOOD CATHOLIC was enjoying a successful week before facing Middle. The Crusaders defeated Absegami and Sacred Heart with a 5-0 score each time. Thea Sanford, Liz Buchanan and Theresa Ward swung the singles racquets successfully in both games. Michelle Brzysti and Michelle Miller paired up for points along with Holly Stokes and Kathleen Ward. Lower Cape May recorded two wins also in the 5-0 scoring oraket. Sheri Sheppard, Kristen Flickenger and Kelly Rasmussen were singles starts, all finishing their opponents off in two sets. Linda Hable and Jenifer Hayes were first doubles winner and Joell MacDonald and Donna Adams ended both matches with the final point. Lower did find some competition at the net against Absegami but still not enough to beat them. The Capers recorded a 3-2 win behind Hable and Sheppard on the singles courts and a duo of Rasmussen and MacDonald for another doubles victory. Since the 5-0 score was the in-thing last week, Ocean City decided to go out and get one and the victim was Vineland. Linda King. Kelly Ross and Kelly Hasbrouck collected the first three points in singles action. Troy Frank and Lianne Fleming picked up point number four and Karen Valiese and Amy VanSandt finished off Vineland with the fifth and final blow.

Jackson Mountain Bows to Middle
CAPE MAY - In opening games of Cape May's Women's Power Volleyball League, defending champion Jackson Mountain Cafe lost three tough games to Middle Township Recreation by scores of 15-12. 15-12 and 15-13. In the first game, the steady serves of Jan Kellaway and Wendy Bruno's aggressive digs helped give Jackson Mountain Cafe an early lead. Middle Township Recreation came from i behind to win behind the I sets of Barb Hensil and the I spikes of Jan Seer and I Gwyn Williams. I The second game was I highlighted by the spikes of Yvonne Wood and the sets of Peg Arnold for Middle Township Recreation. The hits of Debbie Brett and the
sets of Loraine Holt kept Jackson Mountain Cafe in the game. The setting of Jan Fisher and the digs of Loraine Holt gave Jackson Mt. Cafe the early lead in the final game but the net play of Robin Gilbert led her team to the victory Washington St. Gallery opened their season on a high note by defeating Kona Women by scores of 15-13, 15-1 and 15-13.
