Rx Health Watch by Dr. Robert C. Beitman I
Continuing with our discussion of insomnia, today we will focus on physical problems associated with sleep disorders. For example, patients with heart disease can awaken with trouble breathing or the need to urinate. Treatment of the heart disease will usually help take care of the insomnia in such cases. Inflammatory bowel disease keep lots of people up at night with long spells in the bathroom. Getting the disease under control can lead to greater sleep. Also, an itchy rectum can make sleep seem impossible at times without treatment. ESTABLISHMENT in the last decade of special sleep study centers has led to the discovery of previously unknown insominia-causing behaviors. The most common is the "restless legs syndrome", a condition whereby you jerk your legs repetitively and may be unaware of it. Discovery comes in the special sleep laboratory or when the doctor interviews your bed partner who complains about being kicked at night! Your kicking movements may very well be waking you up too. YES, PROBLEMS dealing with the home or office can keep you awake at night. Unfortunately, if not dealt with, these can become long-term problems. You are likely to become increasingly anx-
ious about going to sleep because you know, as you lie there, the problems of t the day will come crowding s up to greet you. At this f point it's time for profes- < sional help before you end i up with a long term sleep ] disorder. : Rotating work schedules < resulting in varied times for sleep can lead to insomnia. Fascinating new I research into the body's ■ circadian rhythms show that many will find it dif- i ficult or impossible to totally adapt to continuous < schedule changes. A DRASTIC one-time schedule change may lead to temporary insomnia, but most people will adjust. Young adults are sometimes seen by parents as hung "night people". Thfi^hiay mean they somehow became trained to new rhythms. A broad array of mental problems has insomnia associated with them, most notably depression and an impending schizophrenic break. Often overlooked is the effect of prescription drugs and certain foods the person is already taking and their interactions which could chemically create insomnia. ) Next week we'll* discuss issues in diagnosis and treatment of insomnia. Health Watch is a public education project of the Cape May County Unit of the American Cancer Society, of which Dr. Beitman is president.

Starting in January of 1986 the county contest pin which is presented to all who enter fish in the county's year-round fishing tournament will revert back to the traditional red entry badge which has been a tournament standby for many years. The 1985 pin, colored in green and gold, was issued solely to mark the event's 50th anniversary.
