MUA Preparing To Produce Wood Chips

SWAINTON - The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority may be

moving into the ' landscaping supply I business sooner than 1 expected as it begins to ! change a portion of the i refuse deposited at its ; gkidfill into a usable i Induct. I The authority's wastewater management program has already made i a commitment to creating a usable . landscaping product with the construction . of its composting plant which, once it is operational, will turn sludge produced at the MUA regional wastewater treatment plants into a high-nitrogen-content soil conditioner. . THE SOLID waste management program is now making a similar move after the authority approved the purchase of a brush and tree chipper at its last regular meeting for use at the MUA sanitary landfill, which is located on the border of Upper Township and Woodbine "We're getting in more than 10 tons of vegetative

wastes a day at the Said Steve Eisenhauer, the authority's solid waste operations and maintenance manager. "In addition to this, we have the trees and brush cleared from the landfill itself." EISENHAUER said the vegetative wastes, which consist of tree stumps and branches and brush material, is separated from the regular waste at the landfill and put in a holding area. The new machine will now allow the authority to turn this material into wood chips for landscaping purposes. "At first we had planned to use the chips just to dress the sides of covered portions of the landfill." Eisenhauer said. "We're getting so much material now. however, that we believe we'll be able to . make it available to the public." THE AUTHORITY had considered making the wood chips, a popular product in home landscaping, available to i members of the public free I of charge if picked up at the landfill site. l "We may have to ' reconsider that option now." Eisenhauer said. \ "We're looking at the possibility of charging a , nominal fee to help offset ' the cost of the chipper." i The authority, at its meeting Oct. 16. approved an appropriation of $14,682 > for the purchase of a chipper from W.E. Timmerman Co. of Whitehouse EISENHAUER said the chipper, which is run on diesel fuel, is capable of accepting trees up to 12 inches in diameter. "This is the type of project we can be proud of." said MUA Chairman Wriiliam F.X. Band. "Any I time we can take waste material out of the landfill and turn it into a usable I product, we're saving f money for the residents of Cape May County and providing better protection i for the environment Eisenhauer said a time frame for making the . product available to the ) public hasn't been established yet since it will depend on the experience \ of how much is used at the J landfill itself and how much excess is generated.
