After the less than spectacular sales of its last couple of releases. Heart has soared into the top 10 with its latest single. "What About Love." and a selftitled album (on Capitol) is about to do the same As can be expected. Heart's sound revolves around the mighty vocals of Ann Wilson and the hard hitting blend of heavy metal and mainstream rock. Unfortunately, the usual problems of material not measuring up to the individual talent continue to surface, causing some spots to sound weak and confused. Maybe Heart is'nt the most adventurous group ol musicians, hut one could do a lot worse than this IN A PAST column. I praised the. work Nashville's - Compleat Records <21 Music Circle East. Nashville. Tn. 37203) is doing in making available obscure British rock from the 60s A new batch of goodies has been reissued for the Anglophile market. Along with The Who. The Small Faces were responsible for : ome of the most exciting records to come out of the mod movement In the States, where only "Itchycoo Park" made much of an impression, their impact was nil. hut ; for a couple of years in ; England they could do no wrong, scoring hit after hit j
They had the knack for coming up with well produced singles that were brutally powerful, yet used enough studio trickery to sound psychedelic. THEIR FRONTMAN. Sieve Marriott, possessed a strong voice and the band, especially drummer Kenny Jones (later to be Keith Moon's replacement in The Who) rocked hard. The Small Faces' Big Music is a stunning collection of hits, album cuts, live tracks, and some previously unreleased goodies. Following the demise of The Small Faces, who later resurfaced with Rod Steward at the helm. Marriott joined forces with Peter Framplon of The Hard to form Humble Pie Eventually, Humble Pie became very successful in the States, but their best releases were their least well known, their first two FORTUNATLEY. Com pleat has them back in circulation with the title of A Slice Of Humble Pie. and they still sound fresh and exciting. Humble Pie fused country, pop. jazz 'especially in Frampton's guitar playing). R&B. and hard driving rock, creating some potent music Ultimately, Humble Pie grew stale, concentrating solely on lackluster rock with Marriott becomming a sad parody of himself, hut these early sides have
retained their charm and beauty. Compleat has also just issued The Singles Collection. a spry compilation of obscure British rock singles cut for highly col-,. ' lectible Immediate label.' NAMES OF artists such as The Mockingbirds. Duncan Browne, and Fifth Avenue might lack commercial appeal, but to collectors these are important as anything by the Stones. Who, Kinks, etc. Hopefully, more will soon follow. A few weeks ago. I ' reviewed two albums by an incredible guitarist, Steve Vai. Predicting big things for him. it didn't surprise me to see he'd replaced Yngwie Malmsteen in the heavy metal band Alcatrazz. Vai's contributions to its new album, Disturbing The Peach (Capitol) are great, bringing in a fluid, melodic style of playing that's all too rare in heavy metal.
