Storing Bulbs for Winter

COURT HOUSE - According to Larry Newbold. Cape May County Agricultural Agent, now is the time of the year to consider digging up and storing for winter those bulbs which are not hardy enough to withstand the cold deep frosts of coming months. Digging up gladiolus corms can be delayed until after the first heavy frost so that corms will have a chance-to increase in size during the frost-free growing season. Discard and burn all diseased plants and corms Cut I he tops close to the corms and place in ventilated boxes or trays for drying. Place corms in a warm, well ventilated loca lion for two to three weeks This hastens drying and helps to hinder development of disease. After cleaning, dusl corms with Arasan or other fungicides for disease control Store corms in airy boxes or open paper bags in P a cool. dry. frost-proof place at a temperature bet ween 35 and 40 degrees F until planting time in spring BE PREPARED to harvest dahlias soon after the first hard frost has

blackened plants. Do not delay, as further heavy frost may injure plants. Before storing dahlias, diseased or broken tubers should be cut out or burned. If not too wet. the tubers should be stored immediately after lifting. Store tubers in a cool, dry. frost-proof room at a temperature of 40 to 45 degrees F Place the tubers in dry. fine sand or slightly moistened peat moss with several layers of newspaper over the top to prevent excessive evaporation. Dahlia tubers should not be allowed to dry out in storage. A shriveled tuber loses some of its vigor and is slower to form a flower than a non-shriveled one WHEN FLOWERING is over, reduce water to tuberous begonia plants I and allow plants to drop I their leaves and dry off en- I tirely. Remove the dead I stems, shake the soil from < ^ tubers, and allow to dry in i a protected place for one lo ' two weeks. Store the tubers < over winter in boxes of dry ! sand or peat moss in a I temperature of 45 to 50 degrees F ' I When the frost blackens s the tops of cannas. cut 1 stems to 6 inches; dig. dry j

off and store rhizomes in dry sand in a cool place at a temperature of 40 to 48 degrees F. In fall after caladium leaves mature water should be gradually withheld, and the tubers in open ground lifted and stored for the winter in dry sand or peat moss in a temperature of 50 to 60 degrees F If plants are in pots, the pots may be laid on their sides and wintered there. « THE GERANIUM plant may successfully be reproduced by 'cutting'' or as some people say. "slipping" a plant. Now is a good time to make cuttings from your geraniums using only the new shoots produced this sumnu«md only from plants wh^HIre vigorous. Make the cuttings four to five inches long; use a and make the cut just a node. It is good practice to dust the cut ends with a rooting medium or disease preventing material such as Capbefore placing in sterile sand, vermiculite or perlite Keep the cuttings moist while in rooting material three-four weeks. Roots should be well formed by four weeks and may be planted. t
